We let them get away with this in regards to auto insurance so why not take a step further.
Law mandated auto insurance and health insurance is two totally and completely different things.
One can be avoided by not purchasing an automobile, the other can only be avoided by stopping breathing.
Owning an auto is a choice. This requirement applies whether you want it or not.
If you do not own a car or choose not to drive anywhere, you do not need to get auto insurance. If you choose to drive, you need the insurance for liability as to damages you might cause to others or their property. It is not even a close comparison. You can choose not to own or drive a car. You are not at risk of any fines or imprisonment for not having a car.
The corollary would be a requirement to carry umbrella insurance in case you injured another person (accidentaly or willfully).
