Tzippi, the Neverwas
Freedom's Cost ^ | 09/27/2009 | Chaim

Kadima leader Tzipi Livni became the first Israeli politician to criticize Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s landmark speech to the United Nations in an interview she gave on Saturday afternoon to Channel 2.

Livni said that Netanyahu made a mistake when he invoked the horrors of the Holocaust in his criticism of Holocaust-denying Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

They needed to be reminded about the UN Charter, or at least they needed to be be shown up as hypocrites. And that is exactly what Netanyahu did! He also reminded them that the Jewish people hold a deed to the Land of Israel, far older and far more legitimate than the UN General Assembly! He had the courage to push back, even if it was only with words.

In every country, in every political strain, there are those who are now, there are hasbeens, there are wannabees and all too many a neverwas…

Jewish history, from biblical time onwards, is filled with instances of courageous women who saved their people time and again. Even in the 20th century, the late Golda Meir showed strength, courage and honor (in spite of her various political mistakes) sorely lacking in Israel’s present political arena. Unfortunately, for herself and for Israel, Tzippi is not destined to go down in history as someone courageous or even as someone smart. Perhaps she should resign from political life, her time has passed, her party is disintegrating and Arik Sharon is no longer able to protect her. Retirement from politics would bring Tzippi some immediate benefits, she just might just the time to take some kabbalah classes with her new friend Maddona.
