Wonder Why the AARP Supports Obamacare?
Bluegrass Pundit ^ | Bluegrass Pundit

The answer may be greed. The AARP has been a strong supporter of Obamacare for the last several months. This position is not held by most of their membership. Many AARP members have resigned over the leaderships position. So, why is the AARP supporting the Democrat's health care overhaul? It isn't concern for providing coverage to their membership. Most seniors have insurance or are covered under Medicare. The reason the AARP supports Obamcare appears to be money. Under the Democrats health care reform plan, $162 billion in payments to privately-administered Medicare Advantage will be cut. This will force many seniors into government-administered plans with less generous benefits. Then, these seniors will need supplemental coverage sold by (drum roll please) the AARP. When private health insurance company Humana tried to warn seniors about the cuts in Medicare Advantage in a mailer, the HHS ordered them to stop sending the mailer and take the information off their website. However, if you want to issue a bulletin supporting the Democrats position that $500 billion can be cut from the Medicare budget without causing any cuts to senior's benefits, HHS doesn't have a problem with you.

I don’t get this AARP. Why do so many people join it? What’s the benefit?

Healthcare for ALL?  NOT!

Everyone in this photo - OUT OF THE POOL!  You've been "Attenuated".

"When implemented, the complete lives system produces a priority curve on which individuals aged roughly 15 and 40 years get the most substantial chance, whereas the youngest and oldest people get changes that are attenuated."

AARP is nothing more than a clever marketing gimmick used by the Democrats.

Burn your AARP membership card.

First ask yourself why you had one to begin with.

AARP is a fraud. They have been pulling this crap for years. Always pushing to eliminate Medicare Advantage plans. Of course, because they get a kickback from United Health Care which writes all of AARP’s supplemental Medicare policies.

Why everyone does not choose a Medicare Advantage plan over regular Medicare is beyond me. They come in HMO and PPO plans. With a Medicare Advantage plan, you do not need to purchase a Supplemental Medicare insurance plan.

I have a Medicare Advantage PPO plan. All I pay is the standard Medicare insurance premium which is deducted from my Social Security each month. The plan has an annual deductible of $1,000 for lab tests, hospital stays, shots, etc. After that the plan picks up 80% of costs until an annual max out of pocket of $3,000.

Regular doctor visits have a $10 co-pay, Specialists have a $20 co-pay, emergency room visits have a $50 co-pay. These plans provide the same drug benefit as Medicare Part D at no extra cost. Hello - that is correct - no need to pay the Part D Drug premium.

Under Obamacare, anyone with a Medicare Advantage will no longer be able to have it. They will be taken away from us, and most of the blame for that goes to AARP.

When you hit 50, you get bombarded by their mailings, and un-requested membership, magazine and newsletter, all at no cost (well, OK, yeah, from the taxes we workers pay).

It all sounds real good -- lots of special offers on insurance, food and travel discounts, medical assistance programs, etc. So, you figure...why not...

Wonder Why the AARP Supports Obamacare?

Not at all. I have considered AARP to be crypto-communist since I first got literature from them fifteen years ago.

Well said.

I’ve know this for decades and was shocked that some Freepers were actually members not knowing the underlying ideology of the AARP leadership.
They’re right in there with SEIU and AFLCIO.

That turns out to be a really good question. Most direct benefits are duplicated by AAA or other membership credit cards like American Express (Supplemental insurance etc.)

It looks like AARP is a bigtime PAC for the DNC so if you don't belong to the NEA that's the next best thing if that's what you want.

The AARP has long been a cheerleader for the left. 0bamacare is just the latest leftist cause they support.

This is a little simplistic. AARP also sells Medicare Advantage plans which will be ended by Obamacare.

The bigger question is how much taxpayer funded goodies go to AARP. And how much more will they get for their support of Obamacare.

There is nothing comparable out there to AARP for seniors in terms of access to a broad range of medications and care at an affordable premium.

It seemed quite apparent to me. I didn’t even follow politics that much back then.

Why everyone does not choose a Medicare Advantage Plan over regular Medicare is beyond me.

Because a MAP is not available for all seniors, especially seniors living in rural areas.
