Buffy Wicks:

As political director of the Wake-Up Wal-Mart campaign, Buffy Wicks was so dedicated in her efforts to increase workers’ wages and health-care benefits that one journalist gave her the nickname “Buffy the Wal-Mart Slayer.”

Now, as state director for the Obama campaign, Wicks, 30, is focusing that same fierce determination to introduce Obama to Missourians through the efforts of a “grassroots army.”

How did you decide to join the Obama campaign?

I’d been working as political director for Wake-Up Wal-Mart, a campaign by the UFCW, the union which represents grocery store workers. We fought for better wages and health care, and pushed Wal-Mart for better wages and health care for their workers. Obama addresses all of these issues, and is, at the same time, an inspirational leader. Because of his biography as a grassroots organizer, he has a strong understanding that people make up the campaign: really, strengthening the middle class, helping them be their own advocates. As a field organizer, I value this tremendously.

Too much to post, but her interview is here:

She now works under Valerie Jarrett, at the Office of Public Engagement (OPE). She heads Obama’s serv.org, too.

Buffy Wicks, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. Wicks has a long history in grassroots organizing and civic engagement. Most recently she was the Director of the Renew America Together effort, the call to service issued by then President-elect Obama. She also served on the Obama for America campaign in a variety of roles, including California Field Director and Missouri State Director, and helped develop the national grassroots field strategy. She has also worked in the labor movement, fighting for better health care and wages for disenfranchised workers. She is originally from California and graduated with a double major in Political Science and History from the University of Washington.
