I submit that every human, with few exceptions, intrinsically understands the world is not what it is supposed to be. For those of us with a Judeo-Christian perspective, the explanation for the world being off is sin, a state of separation from the will and presence of God. However, even if one rejects this theological explanation, they will still acknowledge what it attempts to explain. We have this keen sense that the world is meant to be a certain way, and the way it is falls grossly short of that ideal. Most of us also sense this condition applies, not just to the world, but to we who live in it. Our response to this sense of imperfection is an insatiable desire to shape the world, and ourselves, into something more like what ought to be. For secular humanists and religious leftists who style themselves progressive, the implication of their label is a goal worth progressing toward. That goal has been stated as social and economic justice, peace, a better world, etc. These are terms which defy specific description, yet solicit mindless nodding when proposed. They are different ways of saying the same thing. The world needs to be fundamentally transformed.
... Many of us stood in awe of a presidential campaign that floated entirely on slogan without substance, wondering how in the world people could embrace change they could not define. They embraced it because it was not an earthly promise, but a spiritual one, a promise to fulfill their intrinsic need for cosmic improvement. Change we can all believe in, as opposed to that which many reject.

As you point out, people who follow Obama do not do so out of rational decision but because he has tapped into a deeper need. Hence, their response to those who criticize him is likewise irrational.
One wonders what, if anything, can awaken the Obamanoids from their hypnotic trance.
