One of the criticisms of Obamacare is how will doctors be able to handle the extra patients if all of a sudden all the uninsured become part of their case load. If he new study of doctors performed by IBD is to be believed, the problem will be worse than originally thought, as 45% of all doctors will consider leaving the profession if Obamacare is passed in its present form (take that American Medical Association). More than 800,000 doctors were practicing in 2006, the government says. Projecting the poll's finding onto that population, 360,000 doctors would consider quitting. YIKES, forget health care, think of all the lost marriage opportunities for my daughter.
The AMA might be supporting this legislation, but doctors HATE this bill:

My best freind is a surgical tech here in reno, and she told me a couple of weeks ago that a very large number of doctors in town have stated quite unequivicably that they would retire if this was passed. Can’t claim 40%, but definitely a large number, especially for a town like reno.
Doctors going Galt and I don’t blame them one bit!!!
We need a doctors mrch on Washington. That will drive a stake through the heart of this atrocity.
There were many, many doctors on Capitol Hill last week - the ones we saw were all against the health bill. God bless them!
Maybe they will. Maybe they won't.
Will there be medical centers, hospitals, doctors on the Mexican border?
Think of all the feet and tonsils saved from the biohazard bag.
So we'd probably loose our specialists first - Here's a Texan who tells it like it is - actually reads from the bill - and exposes the lies and insanity.
This man's videos should be shown every hour on the hour on FOX
Where would they go and what would they do in this slowed-down economy? The older ones could probably retire but I doubt that younger doctors can just pack up and leave for another career.
At this point, I'm hoping there really is a Galt's Gulch - and that I can find it - wonder if they need a writer/artist?
I couldn't believe he said that on TV and that he got away with it. That had to be one of the most inane and egregious statements ever made.
He also alluded to how when a child is taken into the hospital with an asthma attack, they don't need to be kept overnight.
Many children will die if his bill gets through and their rules are put in place. He knows NOTHING about asthma or medicine period...even tho' he's 'god'.
Many doctors have packed it in because of malpractice insurance = I know one that has gone to long-hauling.
Oh, great, then we could get third-world and Muslim doctors like they have in the UK.
Can’t blame ‘em. Better opportunities offshore and a hell of a lot less hassles from the government.
I remember reading in a French textbook in the early 90s that French doctors were doing stuff like driving taxis once socialized medicine hit, because there were too many doctors. On the flip side, the government took to running PSAs begging people not to go to the doctor for every little sliver, hangnail, etc., because they were flooding the system.
I'm sure that doctors will be able to find other careers here, too, like they did in France.
One doctor I know..refuses to work for the government. He is also a devout Catholic and will not preform abortions. He is a throw back to the norm and has a degree in engineering (go figure). He and his frugal wife are preparing for the worst. Scaling back, etc. He is mid 50’s. not old by any stretch.
I think the doctors that are sincere about the Hippocratic Oath will bail, our loss. The ones that don't care, will hang around for the free ride.
OMG many of us (Docs) will just fade into social security and oblibion. And I am one of these docs. Will I still treat my friends and family, yes; but for the rest the thundering herd?
I doube it
WE have a friend who several years ago when the HMOs were being especially problematic did just that..This doc took some med admin type courses to assist in recruiting docs for other clinics etc and apart from that changed career and is quite happy with what he is doing now.
I should add that my father was a general surgeon, practiced medicine for 50 years. I can recall, as a kid in jr high school hearing him complain then about medicare and that it would lead to socialized medicine in the future. I am glad he is not here now to see what his beloved profession faces. It would kill him. He was one of the docs who actually made house calls, met patients at the hospital at 0200 in the morning, was on his knees praying for them especially before surgery..he cared more about his patients than any money ever. We did not live in a house until I was in high school, living instead over his office. And before he went into clinic practice, when he had control of his own practice, at Christmas, he would go through all the ledgers and he knew what families were on hard times...he would send them a card, wish them good health in the new year and forgive the debt! So I won’t stand for anyone talking to me about greedy doctors.
