Judging by the author's parting shot, ("I then post on freerepublic.com and fox news forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right."), his point is that government is not, contrary to FReepers notions, inept but highly beneficial.

Conservatives do believe that government is inept and inefficient and often intrusive but our political stance is grounded in our understanding that the test is not whether the government is acting beneficiently but whether it is acting constitutionally. When a government acts inefficiently, intrusively, tyrannically or, yes even socialisticlly, these are but symptoms of their repugnance to the constitution.

Conservatives do not say that the delivery of the mail by the federal government is wrong because it is explicitly provided for in the Constitution. That the author cites this as an example of government efficiency, or at least beneficence and convenience, is to shoot himself in the foot. Likewise, conservatives recognize the Constitution explicitly provides for the federal government to provide for the common defense. We think the government has done so by its contribution to the Internet. We do not delude ourselves that the miracle of the Internet as it exists in my home today is the product of government action, nor even the action of Al Gore, we know that is the product of countless individual innovators and entrepreneurs. The sort of people the Constitution told Congress to provide for by giving them patents to encourage their personal industry.

Police powers are not socialist and they are properly defined under the Constitution as being a state and local responsibility. The author is confused and his confusion is compounded by his insistence on conflating Socialism with regulation. It is further compounded by his willfully ignoring the Constitution's provisions for federal division of responsibility with the states.

The author mentions OSHA. I have been confronted with OSHA in many businesses and the experiences were never satisfactory. There was one occasion, however, which occurred not in business but in the saddle high in the mountains of Montana far removed from any edifice or even any paved road where I espied a portable toilet. In response to my inquiries about why in the world of portable toilet would be placed so deep in the wilderness, I was told by my companion who was a local rancher, "OSHA made them put it there for the Cowboys to shit in. They shit in the woods and pee against the outside of it."

Maybe the author is correct, there should be no end to the beneficence of our federal government.

Judging by the examples that your friend has selected, he/she is clearly either a warmonger or at minimum an enthusiastic supporter of the military-industrial complex. How does he/she reconcile that with touchy-feely socialism?

It seems that your friend can trace the origin of so many of these amazing things not to some foolish American dalliance with "socialism", but rather to the US Military and its role in the Defense of the nation as outlined in the Constitution.

GPS, NOAA, satellites, the Internet, our interstate highway system, etc., were developed for the defense of the USA - a completely legitimate function of our Federal gov’t. If we receive social benefits as a result of these systems, so much the better. But their primary function is for defense & national security. If we have a war or national crisis, some or all of these things may not be available to the public. Socialism turned off, abruptly!

On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the socialist US Postal Service (ya got me there!!!) and drop the kids off at the socialist (Correction-Locally run) public school. If I get lost, I can use my socialist GPS navigation technology developed by the United States Department of Defense (Designed, built, and run, FOR PROFIT by Capitalist Ivan Getting!) and made available to the public in 1996 by President Bill Clinton (YOU LIE!!! Um, the 'warmonger' quip was tongue-in-cheek, intended to evoke a reaction from clueless socialists who foolishly see themselves as pure and driven by completely harmless, altruistic motives (as contrasted with those evil capitalists and international Zionist bankers and puppy-killing Republican environment-rapists), and who therefore typically evidence little support for the military (except when it is being used to effect social engineering, for example, normalizing gays' status in society by pushing for acceptance of gays in the military)... You will be hard pressed to find a truthful socialist who will admit that destruction of freedom and repression of the public by force is a prerequisite for its widespread adoption.

If you're lucky, when you confront a socialist with the military origins of government programs that they tout as evidence of the beneficence of government control and largesse, you will be treated to the spectacle of seeing the socialist's head explode (so you might want to stand far enough away that you avoid most of the splatter)...
