Google Search directs Joewilsonforcongress to anti Joe site!

If you have Firefox with Google as default search engine and you mistakenly type Joewilsonforcongress.org you go to a fact check type site that says "Joe said Obama lied but he didn't" Don't click on the link I do not want them to get hits on that blog. This is blatant politization of the search engine process. Now, to change your firefox so it does not use Google in the address bar live search: Type about:config hit enter.

Scroll down and find browser.search.defaultenginename Change from Google to Yahoo (others work too, ymmv)

TOPICS: Politics
KEYWORDS: google; joewilson; sc
I know its hard to not use Google but our lives and country would be better off without it.

I just typed the words with spaces and without and dot anything and I got a fair scattering of results. I know that google is run by a passel of leftists but in this case we might be Grasping For Grievances.

(Might be better to focus our outrage on real problems.)

Actually, it’s pretty easy to avoid Google. I use bing and yahoo for searches, no gmail accounts, etc. I don’t particularly care for Yahoo, either, but Google is an arrogant, crooked operation that insists on pushing its will on its users. And, I can’t abide that.

It’s time to take back the country.

I use Opera and Firefox (3.5.2). Both have Google boxes. I entered joewilsonforcongress.org in the Google box in each browser; both took me to the Google page which said at the top:

Did you mean joewilsonforcongress.com

with links to Rep. Wilson's real website 'joewilsonforcongress.com' and his real Facebook page. Next I entered 'joewilsonforcongress.org' in both browsers and, lo and behold!, the browser was hijacked instantly to

which is a screed against Mr. Wilson on the St. Pete Times's Polifact.com's "Truth-O-Meter" site. Sure, this is dishonest of them. But are you surprised?

Yesterday I attended the Cleveland County Fair and stopped at the Donk Party booth. They had a sign recommending both Polifact.com and Factcheck.org (you know, the website that published the phony Obama COLB).

I also stopped at the Republican Party booth and admired the copies of the U.S. Constitution (which the Donks didn't have and apparently don't recommend) as well as "Don't Tread on Me" flags.

Good details but I was talking about the address bar autosearch. I did find the correct site quickly enough but this is google shenanigans. I changed the address bar search to yahoo and it takes me to a 404 page not found which is preferable.
I then deleted google from the yahoo search window and added bing and searchalot.

I also tried bing.com and dogpile.com, two other well-known search engines. Both directed me to the .com website. So the problem is Google dirty tricks. No surprise there, either.

Hackers Imperil Wilson Campaign Web Site

By Chad Pergram

FOXNews.com

Sunday, September 13, 2009

Rep. Joe Wilson chose an unconventional venue in which to level an attack on President Obama Wednesday night: a joint session of Congress.

Now Wilson’s opponents are counterattacking him in an increasingly popular venue for political mayhem: cyberspace.

Sources close to the South Carolina congressman charge that hackers have blitzed his campaign Web site JoeWilsonforCongress.com with a series of attacks that periodically shut down the page.

The South Carolina Republican jeered at Obama “You lie!” during his health care reform speech to Congress on Wednesday. Though Wilson’s Democratic opponent Rob Miller raised hundreds of thousands of dollars following the outburst, Wilson saw a fundraising windfall of his own, raising $1,000,000 in online campaign contributions since Wednesday night. Now sources familiar with Wilson’s campaign say there’s a concerted effort by hackers to flood the congressman’s Web site and keep him from raising money.

“This is an obvious effort to stifle the congressman’s voice for a common-sense approach for health care reform,” said a source familiar with Wilson’s campaign.

Sources say Wilson’s opponents ganged up on the Web site, dispatching thousands of “phantom” computers, infected with malware, to send request after request to Wilson’s campaign Web site. Such a barrage of requests overwhelms the site and causes it to crash. A source close to Wilson indicated that hackers took down the campaign Web site for five hours Friday night.

“These tactics create such a huge surge,” said a Wilson campaign source. “We’ve had to fight this off in hand-to-hand combat, blocking this malicious traffic.”

In many respects, this is the high-tech version of a politician’s opponents driving through a neighborhood and vandalizing campaign signs. In computer-speak, the effort to ping the computer so frequently creates what’s called a “denial of service request.” That takes the site offline.

“It’s like an ‘e-warrior’ kind of politics,” said David Almacy, a senior vice president at Edelman Public Affairs who studies the nexus of technology and government. “There are groups of people who believe that if they can shut down someone’s Web site, they hurt their ability to campaign.”

Almacy likened the assault on Wilson’s Web site to an August effort by hackers to take down the micro-blogging site Twitter and stymie the social-network site Facebook. In that instance, armies of infected computers repeatedly pinged Twitter and Facebook, sometimes millions of times a minute.

The requests to visit the pages eventually overwhelmed the sites because they simply didn’t have the bandwidth. Wilson sources suspect the same is true in with these hacks.

I NEVER on use Google on my personal computers because it is definitely slanted toward the liberal side. Our college uses Google as the default search engine, so I may rarely use it in the classroom - usually just to search for Yahoo so that I can use it to find what I am really looking for.
