Illegal Immigrants Could Not Buy Insurance on New Exchange, White House Says
By DAVID M. HERSZENHORN
The White House on Friday said it would bar illegal immigrants from purchasing health coverage through a proposed insurance marketplace. But the administration also said that the federal government would continue to require hospitals to provide emergency treatment to illegal immigrants at taxpayer expense.
The question of how illegal immigrants would fare under a proposed overhaul of the health care system came into sharp focus on Wednesday during President Obamas speech to Congress. Representative Joe Wilson, Republican of South Carolina, shouted You lie! when Mr. Obama insisted that his health care overhaul would not insure illegal immigrants.
And the Obama administrations determination to show that immigrants will not benefit from the health system overhaul highlighted the extraordinary sensitivity to the issue at a time when lawmakers still remain divided over whether the government should pay to provide health coverage for all American citizens.
A White House spokesman, Reid Cherlin, said that the presidents proposals would bar illegal immigrants from purchasing private insurance through the new government marketplace, known as an exchange, and that verification of immigration status would be required for anyone seeking to purchase coverage.

Uh...they would already be enrolled in the gov’t run system...after being given ‘amnestied’ citizenship
Olly olly ox in free.
LIES LIES AND MORE LIES!!! They already get free healthcare. And, Mr Ossama, your next project will be to make them legal. You SOBs make me sick.
Are they going to fine them $3800 for not buying insurance?
Obama is such a liar. Illegals will get it FREE like everything else. They will not have to buy or pay for anything.
Of course they won't be allowed to purchase (PAY for) PRIVATE insurance. They will be given FREE Governemnt supplied (at taxpayer expense) insurance.
NY times...
YOU LIE!!!
Obama says, “Never mind that the Democrats in the Congress refused to pass an amendment requiring verification. I can do that by executive fiat.
A White House spokesman, Reid Cherlin, said that the presidents proposals would bar illegal immigrants from purchasing private insurance through the new government marketplace, known as an exchange, and that verification of immigration status would be required for anyone seeking to purchase coverage.
“I’ll just tell the person I appoint as Health Choices Commissioner to require verification. That’s the person who will be responsible for determining whether your health insurance coverage is ‘acceptable,’ and also for assigning you a new policy from the Exchange if the policy you have now is ‘unacceptable.’”
...so we’re going to ask people to show Proof of Birth or naturalization when it comes to healthcare when liberals & courts prevent such measures just about everywhere else? Color me a skeptic.
Yet they STILL refuse to write the veriifcation of immigration status INTO the bill.
I agree with the White House. Illegal immigrants will not be able to benefit because they will be made legal.
They are lying. Both amendments that would require this were defeated. This restriction is NOT in the bill.
Illegals are covered right now, barring them from purchasing insurance is not going to deny them care. Anyone been to an ER room lately, illegals already get FREEEEEE health care it is the law that no one can be turned away in need of medical care. Now some hospitals might have contingency plans to send the poor to some public hospital but none can be denied care.
And illegals also get FREEEEE education paid for by property owners.
Exactly, that's how he doesn't "Lie" by saying illegals will be covered, because by the time he gets around it, they won't be "illegal" anymore, just 20 million new "citizens" sucking at the governement's teat..
