Imagine 400,000 people in upstate New York gathered to protest the Vietnam War and listen to a free rocket concert with likes of Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Crosby Stills Nash & Young on stage. Well, this was the subject of a program on the History Channel last weekend and now there is a new movie commemorating the event 40 years ago during the summer of 1969.
There are some who claim that the grisly Manson murders which occurred just weeks before in California brought to an end the hippie subculture which dominated the 1960s. Others continue to have fond memories of this period and cite the Woodstock music festival as the crowning achievement of the period.
Watching this program on the History Channel you saw all of these young people gathering on this farm in a rural area in upstate New York, most of them ingesting drugs including LSD. Others were skinny dipping in the near by pond. The rains came in and most were covered in mud. The smells were awful. A mixture of marijuana, body odor, and poor sanitary conditions hung over the area. Someone sleeping in a meadow was run over and killed by a farmer's tractor.
The whole thing seemed simply awful. No way to spend a vacation or enjoy a good time in such filth and squalor. And towards the end of the program it fast forwarded to BHO's massive inaugural rally in Washington D.C. in January of this year as a sign of vindication for the radical left and the peace movement. After toiling in the trenches for forty years they had finally arrived and their views were now on the ascendant as their ideological and philosophical brethern now dominate the halls of Congress and the White House.
We, the normal people of America, are now on the outside looking in. The demonstrators who took the streets in the 1960s are now committee chairmen, high level czars in the BHO Adminstration, and tenured college professors.
Out of wedlock births are now common place, same sex marriage is becoming legal in many states, radical left teachers unions control public education. Look at all the achievements of the counterculture. And yes, their views have finally triumphed judging on who controls the Congress, the Executive Branch, Hollyweird, the MSM.
The values of Woodstock permeate our culture and government on every conceivable level now. There is more in America that divides than unites us. The limited republican form of government devised by our Founding Fathers has been effectively replaced by popular mass democracy and virtually unlimited government. Of course socialism is the only logical conclusion.
Let’s forget it, better still...
My wife was at Woodstock and as we watched Taking back Woodstock yesterday, we both knew full well that something like this could never EVER happen again.
If this is progression, then it is we who have failed. not the hippies

gee....that’s a new one. But then, the F Cheer and Alices Restaurant were sung there....
Hippie college students in the sixties were mostly just looking for an excuse to miss class with the rationalization that it was for a bigger more noble cause. The drop outs just wanted a convenient excuse to do as much drugs as possible.
I have done everything I could possibly could to prevent this day from ever happening. I volunteered in all of RR’s presidential campaigns. My parents supported Goldwater, my grandparents supported Taft. This is not the America I know.
Don’t take the brown acid, man.
If you can remember Woodstock, you weren’t there.
The other Woodstock, Snoopy’s little bird friend, has had a more positive legacy.

All while other young men and women died while servicing their country half a world away. Seems what the young dumbies did pass up was service to their country.
