Maybe it's because her dad served in the U.S. Marines ... or because her high school mascot is a fierce-looking eagle ... or because she plans to enlist in the Army next summer after graduation to defend her country ... whatever the reason, when Heather Lawrence saw a fellow student refuse to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and recite it with the class, the 16-year-old Junior ROTC member saw a teachable moment and took it.
And for that, she's been suspended five days.
Lawrence's troubles with administrators at Springstead High School in Spring Hill, Fla., began last Wednesday when she noticed a female Muslim student refusing to participate in the Pledge. The student was wearing a hijab, the traditional Muslim headscarf.
Later in the day, Lawrence encountered the student between periods and told her she should stand for the pledge, reported Hernando Today.
"Take that thing off your head and act like you're proud to be an American," Lawrence told her.

Not standing for the pledge or the National Anthem is in poor taste but it wouldn’t be illegal or grounds for harassment. Telling the young muslim woman to remove the “thing” off her head is understandable but it’s over the line of decent behavior.

Her actions were Un-Americann.
Telling someone what to wear or not to wear and when they must stand and what they must say is very UN-American.
It’s not patriotic at all to order someone else about just because you don’t agree with what they wear or what they do ... it’s bullying.
We have something called individual liberty in this country. That student should mind her own business.
Muslim student has first amendment right to wear habib and NOT stand for Pledge. American Christian student gets suspended for using HER first amendment rights.

Yes, she should have minded her own business, but should she have been punished for it?

The school could of handled this better. A sit down discussion between the two students might of been less polarizing. Even though I detest Islam, I believe that religious freedom is as essentially American as standing for the pledge.
You mean something such as the First Amendment, guaranteeing free speech, most specifically political speech.

I would agree that someone should speak with her about the individual's right NOT to stand for the pledge, but to suspend her? That's over the line in itself.
The student is minding my business as well...And I applaud her for it...

I agree with you Lorianne. We should never stand up and speak out for what we believe in. Especially if it will hurt some one's feelings.

I believe free speech is absolute, so yes, the bullying student has a RIGHT to tell people off.
However, free speech counters free speech.
If a Liberal came over and started bossing you around I bet you’d have a different take on the matter.
The student was with her rights but she’s still a busybodying jerk.
There are totalitarians on the far right and the far left.
I will fight against both without bias.
