The Senate is actually giving consideration to a bill that would give the president the power to "shut down online traffic by seizing private networks".
A Senate bill would offer President Obama emergency control of the Internet and may give him a "kill switch" to shut down online traffic by seizing private networks -- a move cybersecurity experts worry will choke off industry and civil liberties.

In a word (or more)... that would be the dumbest damn thing any body in the world has ever done, considering much (most)of banking and commerce and business is now dependant on the internet.
That my friends ...would be a bigger blow to the World’s economy than 9-11 X 20.

The freedom of speech issue is a biggie....
But talk about wrecking complete worldwide havoc in the market place..I can’t even imagine...
Seize the banks.
Seize the auto manufacturers.
Seize the atmosphere.
Seize food.
Seize healthcare.
Seize talk radio.
Seize the internet.

It’s easy - just ask Al Gore. He invented it, he knows where the single plug is that turns the whole thing off...
There’s a new bill working its way through Congress that is cause for some alarm: the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (PDF summary here), introduced by Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME). The bill as it exists now risks giving the federal government unprecedented power over the Internet without necessarily improving security in the ways that matter most. It should be opposed or radically amended.
And why does this restriction on the internet even need to be considered by Congress?
Not to be nit-picky about it, but is it possible that our former professor of constitutional law, the Resident, has forgotten that the Constitution says the following (among other enumerated rights):
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
“When Rockefeller, the chairman of the Senate Commerce committee, and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) introduced the original bill in April, they claimed it was vital to protect national cybersecurity.
When Obama invited Snowe to a private meeting in the White House, he must have had sex with her. She voted for the stimulus, and now wants to hand him the internet. Snowe is more like a communist these days.
Do not trust the government about anything. And don’t believe what the government says.

Doubtful seeing that there were about 62,000,000 knuckleheads last November that wanted this to happen.
