Obama's Cash For Clunkers: Dealers Reporting Cars Stolen By Consumers (1st Accepted-Later Rejected)
Consumer Affairs ^

Posted on 08/24/2009 2:33:31 PM PDT by MaxCUA

A coalition of consumer groups is calling on the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to ensure, as the agency winds down the Cash for Clunkers program, that dealers are not "double-dipping" and getting paid twice -- once by their customers and again by the government. During the past several weeks, the rejection rate for Cash for Clunkers transactions has hovered around 80 percent.

Many dealers jumped the gun and entered into a high volume of contracts in July, before the rules governing the program were issued and before any deals were approved. Since then, the program has been overwhelmed, causing delays in payments to dealers.

We have friends who bought a car for their college-bound son under this program. But it was early on and they had no issues. Once it got rolling and the initial cash was used up, and dealers found they weren’t being reimbursed by the Feds in a timely manner, all hell broke loose.

If I were interested in taking advantage of this program (I’m not, nor never would be) I’d not sign any paperwork until everything was read up-front, nor would I hand over the keys to my trade-in until I’d sign and had the keys to the new vehicle in my hand. I don’t trust car dealers, and I sure don’t trust the government.

It doesnt bother me if folks lined up at the “free money” trough get burned.

What bothers me is all the innocent tax payers that are gonna get burned.

I wonder what will happen when some of these clunker owners who jumped on this band wagon cannot keep up the payments on their new car.

Another bailout?

"This is actually a high-class problem to have -- that we're selling too many cars too quickly, and there's some backlog in the application process," Obama said in a radio interview released by the White House.

Highclass my ***

Another bailout?

I doubt it. The problem wouldn't be that widespread, to begin with. I'm sure the repo people will be happy, though. But those caught up in it will be angry about losing their wheels, and I wonder who'll they'll blame...

Many of these buyers can’t afford the new car payments. Mark my words they’ll default on the loans just like people did on housing.

This is quite normal for the federales. All the US government payment systems ASSUME that the payee may be commiting fraud.

The purpose this assumption serves is to avoid having to go to federal district court. The US courts are simply not well equipped to handle normal, small debts or petty crime.

By federalizing medical care, your malpractice case will never get heard!

There’s a car dealership near my house that sold so many cars they’ve got the trade-ins parked in a neighboring church parking lot. There’s about sixty cars there, and I noticed some of them had notices on them indicating they were for sale. I started wondering what the controls were on the CFC program, and if dealers might try to sell the cars that they’re supposed to be destroying. Which brings me to my other point - if the cars I saw are supposed to be destroyed, it is a terrible waste. Collectively, they must still have hundreds of thousands of miles on them. Few if any looked liked “clunkers,” and most seemed like very nice, functional cars in the 1995-2004 age bracket.

“Nurse, please, I’ve been waiting hours for my pain pill.

“Oh, I’m sorry, ma’am, the federal government is so far behind with the paper work that it might take several weeks before we can give you the pain pill.”

I'm guessing that not all trade-ins are/were clunkers. Those that were not are certainly available for resale.

If I were a dealer, I would NOT trash any trade-in "clunkers" until I got my government check. That way, if the government reneged on their end of the deal, I could still sell the cars as used cars.

Oh, this is no contest - while the car dealer can cheat you out of up to the price of a car, the government can continue to steal from you for the rest of your life.
