Your question brings back memories of my childhood in the 50’s when during the alarms that would go off while we were in school; we would have to get under our desks ...like that would somehow save us...shezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

And every Saturday, they would “test” the sirens at noon...
we always thought that “if” the Commies wanted to attack they would do so at noon on Saturday because no one ever paid much attention to the sirens.

I was told by a teacher that the reasons we lined up outside the class room and faced the wall - while the teacher held the attendance book in hand - was so that after the bomb fell they could identify our remains which would be lined up in neat rows.

True story.

Everyone like to make fun of those drills, as if all atomic bombs were going to detonate directly above the school house. But while the city I lived in the early sixties may have been miles away from ground zero, the shock wave may have still shattered glass or otherwise damaged the building and yes, getting under that desk may have saved me.

Sometimes we'd have to get under desks until someone decided it'd be safer just curling up in the hallway. Hey, you wouldn't want to get glass shards from the windows before you were fried. I remember there were several homemade shelters in backyards when I'd walk to school. I'd love to have one now days. I'd even enjoy living in one of those abandoned military silo contraptions.
