Everyone like to make fun of those drills, as if all atomic bombs were going to detonate directly above the school house. But while the city I lived in the early sixties may have been miles away from ground zero, the shock wave may have still shattered glass or otherwise damaged the building and yes, getting under that desk may have saved me.

You bring up a point. Nowadays everyone talks of a nuclear exchange as envisioned during the Cold War as wiping all life away in an instant.

The reality is that those drills could have saved lots of lives just a few miles from a blast site.
