Here is video of Actress Patricia Heaton on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?", playing for charity. The scene that unfolds you will not believe if you have not seen it. On the very first question, Heaton is asked a simple math question that just dumbfounds her. It's painful to watch! Host Regis Philbin was exhausted by the time it was over! . . . . (Watch Video)

Her husband was her phone a friend and he probably would have gotten it right but he said he could not understand the question because the sound kept cutting out. They should have retaped the segment right there if you ask me. And Patricia would not have had to agonize over it.
You're joking right? I'm not a math genius, either, but even I could figure that one out in my head. Both parts.
‘Took me about 30 seconds.
What would we have done if it was Obama, Biden, Pelosi or Reid who flubbed this question ?
Nothing...they would have had their staff receive the questions beforehand...had a flip chart on stage to present the answer...would later state it was a 'gotcha' question from the antagonistic, mean spirited media.
Do they not teach math in the Royal Army? Never mind.
Well, that was pitiful unless they were drawing it out because they had a segment to fill.
Does anybody remember when Rep. Pat Schroeder was a contestant on Celebrity Jeopardy? I think she was playing against Noah Wiley and Charles Shaughnessy.
Schroeder ended Double Jeopardy with negative dollars, so the producers had to give her $1,000 to play in Final Jeopardy.

My way is easier.
I have to agree. The $100 questions on that show are typically kindergarten level, and that one wasn’t. I have a high IQ but I’ve always had problems with word problems, and Heaton obviously does too.
I wonder how many Obama voters would get that one right.
Your right, though. I just have issues when someone INSISTS that they are right when they are clearly wrong. And then when you try to explain it to them they keep asking “why?”.
“Okay, subtract 40 from 100.”
“Why?”
“Because we are trying to determine the amount after a 40% discount.”
“How do you know that is what you have to do?”
“Well I can show it to you algebraically if you’d like.”
“I hate doing algebra.”
You’re right. Not worth losing the marriage over...
I have a doctorate and took advanced calculus in high school and I am definitely not joking.
I think this is ridiculous— especially when compared to the larger genre of first questions from millionaire.
I doubt there is any example of a start up question that approaches anything near this degree of difficulty.
What is ridiculous is how even some conservatives are not getting the REAL point here.
Why are you evading that?
You said: “What would we have done if it was Obama, Biden, Pelosi or Reid who flubbed this question ?
And What would the left have done if it was Quayle, Palin, Bush or Cheney ?
They would have been figuratively boiled in oil is what would have happened. She does not get a pass from me.”
Good grief, she just missed a math question!
Must we imperfect humans ensure everyone else is properly judged?
And like Microsoft ——while technically accurate it is absolutely useless. The point of solving a mathematical problem in a way that is meaningful is so that you can of course use the technique in a similar situation. Yours does not really afford that for the end user. No doubt you are either a programmer or some other NON engineering/mathematical type
True but I rarely ever have to pull out a calculator.
And I didn’t need a calculator to do the problem in a way that is useful AND meaningful.
What is ridiculous is how even some conservatives are not getting the REAL point here.
Why are you evading that?
LOL!
I haven't watched the show since Regis left. I don't remember if they had a timeframe in which to answer the questions. But I was able to solve it in my tiny non-mathematically inclined brain in 8-10 seconds, using only my fingers. If the question flustered her, it must have been due to nerves, and being on a TV quiz show, and having a math question thrown at her. I'm sure anyone, in the privacy of their own home, could answer that question. I doubt there was an anti-conservative conspiracy!
She too got a math question and she too was a nervous wreck. Lucky for her, her phone a friend figured it out immediately and Wynona won $50K for her charity. She also gave the studio audience a copy of her new CD which is a collection of very old standards, think Nat King Cole.
Maybe that's the reason they give them math questions. The network doesn't just want to dole out $50K without somewhat of a struggle. They don't want to make it TOO easy.
NOT GUILTY!!!case dismissed...
