“Is Nigeria the Next Somalia?”

SNIPPET: “Apparently they’ve been around since 2004. This weekend’s attacks were apparently in response to the arrest of several bombmakers last week.”

SNIPPET: “I hope somebody is watching this.”

oh then it´s ok.
But without a joke africa usually doesn´t makes news in most of europe. so if they kill 100 or 1000 people it will only get a minimum head line here. “We” gave up africa long time ago. All europeans care is how to stop illegal immigration from this basket case.

The Taliban got the martyrdom sought.

They should rename the Police Department, the satisfaction fulfillment department.

“They should rename the Police Department, the satisfaction fulfillment department.”

Make that”
“They should rename the Police Department, the wish fulfillment department.”

Satisfaction in the afterlife is most assuredly not going to happen.

“Islamist violence grips northern Nigeria”
By GEORGE GORMANJuly 28, 2009 11:08 AM

SNIPPET: “A Fundamentalist Doctrine

Boko Haram, which translates to “education is prohibited,” is also known by its Arabic name, Al Sunna Wal Jamma, or the “Followers of Mohammad’s Teachings.” The group was founded in 2004 in Kanamma village in northern Yobe State, which borders Niger. Many members of Boko Haram are disgruntled youth, many whom are former university student dropouts and disillusioned graduates.

The group conducted similar, but less bloody, assaults on police stations during New Year’s Day 2003. The group’s silence has helped keep them out of the sights of local authorities for the last few years, allowing them to expand as poverty and lack of economic development has frustrated the youth in northern Nigeria.

Even though sharia law has been enforced more strictly in the 12 predominantly Muslim states of northern Nigeria since 2000, Boko Haram demands a “full Sharia” adoption of Islamic Law in the 12 states of northern Nigeria. The group seeks a ban throughout Nigeria on Western education, culture, and science that the group deems sinful; and, contrary to its name, the group aims to provide Islamic schooling as the only form of education to the public.

Abdullah, a member of Boko Haram, told Reuters that the group intends to “clean the (Nigerian) system which is polluted by western education and uphold the Sharia all over the country.””

Islamic Extremists Kill Pastor, Raze Churches in Nigeria
PERSECUTION.ORG - INTERNATIONAL CHRISTIAN CONCERN ^ | July 29, 2009 | N/A
Posted on July 30, 2009 10:00:38 AM PDT by Cindy

Washington, D.C. (July 29, 2009) – International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that Islamic extremists killed a pastor and razed five churches in the city of Maiduguri, Nigeria, on July 27. The extremists also attacked two churches in the Nigerian city of Potiskum.

Yakubu Sabo, a husband and father of seven, was hacked to death with a machete by members of a violent Islamic militant group know as Boko Haram (which means “education is prohibited”). Sabo pastored a Church of Christ congregation in Maiduguri.

Deeper Life Church, Evangelical Mission, and Church of the Brethren are three of five other churches set ablaze by Islamists in Maiduguri. In the city of Potiskum, Islamists attacked First Baptist Church and Church of the Brethren. They also burned the musical instruments and sound systems of the churches before police came and chased them away.

Violence erupted on July 26 when police arrested leaders of Boko Haram. In retaliation, members of the group attacked a police station in the city of Bauchi...

An earlier, possibly related thread: Nigerian Troops Attack Islamist Mosque, Kill 100. From that article:
Nigeria's 140 million people are roughly divided between Christians in the south and northern-based Muslims. Shariah was implemented in 12 northern states after Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999 following years of oppressive military regimes. More than 10,000 Nigerians have died in sectarian violence since then.
The Christians are the more educated and productive segment of the population.

“Radical Nigerian Muslim leader killed in custody”
Ibrahim Mshelizza, Reuters
Published: Thursday, July 30, 2009

SNIPPET: “MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — The leader of a radical Islamic sect in northern Nigeria has been killed in police detention hours after being captured by the security forces, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

“He has been killed. You can come and see his body at the state police command headquarters,” said Isa Azare, spokesman for the police command in the northern city of Maiduguri.

Earlier in the day Nigerian security forces captured the leader of a radical Islamic sect responsible for days of clashes which have killed more than 180 people.”

SNIPPET: “President Umaru Yar’Adua said intelligence agencies had been tracking the group, sometimes referred to as the “Nigerian Taliban,” for years and that its members were procuring arms and learning to make bombs to force their views on Nigerians.

He ordered the security forces to take all necessary action to “contain them once and for all.””
