The campaign to make Obama produce an official long certificate is stirring up Americans all over the country demanding that Obama prove that he truly is an American citizen. Listen to what happened at a recent town hall meeting with Republican Congressman Mike Castle (DE)concerning the Obama birth certificate, and listen to this pansy Congressman deal with his constituents. This Congressman better be worried about his job in 2010 if this is the best answer he has, which is similar to an answer Roy Blunt gave me. Why are Republicans protecting Obama in this matter?

Well put. The evidence is clear there is something about his long form that he and his allies have spent significant effort hiding.
Republican Congressman Mike Castle is clueless.
He actually attempts to defend the usurper.
Explanations given for him fighting tooth and nail to prevent revealing his birth certificate: He is playing a sick game. He wants to establish a pattern that nobody will question anything about him. He was not born in Hawaii.
THAT is the issue
He is hiding his birth certificate, even to the point of excusing soldiers from combat duty if they question his authority. Why?
This sets him (US) up for blackmail by any foreign or domestic power that obtains the information he is hiding

At this stage of the game, if he did produce a birth certificate, would everyone believe it to be authentic?

If he releases it to the press and holds a press conference with the HI officials who in turn vouch for it, yes. I’d drop it, as would 98% of the so called birthers.
