Sick of Jackson coverage?
American Solvent ^ | July 8, 2009 | Zeleke D. Snyder

The past few weeks were the worst time to die. If you died right now (at the time of this writing) or in the past few weeks, you would be out of luck, very lucky if you could at least get into the local newspaper’s obituaries. Michael Jackson’s death has dominated the headlines. I think we should all send our condolences to the family for the tragic loss. But the ridiculous amount of attention Jackson has received–as did Anna Nicole Smith and many other entertainers–reveals something about where our priorities in America are at.

For the past few weeks, the only thing in all of media was Michael Jackson’s death. It received more media than even a President’s death. Much of the attention was very well deserved; Michael Jackson made significant contribution to American culture. It’s just been too much. We saw week after week of slideshows, testimonials on the air from Jermaine Jackson to the guy who crossed Michael Jackson in the airport. Since the media airs what the audience wants, this shines some light on what the people in America think. All this has led me to question our priorities in America.

If I had been an alien visitor who just landed his flying saucer, I would have thought this was the death of a great world leader who saved millions of lives. But to the earthlings, this was the death of a singer and dancer.

With the passage by the House of Crap and Trade the US economy as we know it came one step closer to death, and barely a mention above the MJ coverage. Go figure

But look at it this way, we have a new form of hyperbole to use when describing things to, as in, “It was bigger than Michael Jackson’s funeral.” “It was longer than Michael Jackson’s funeral.” “There were more freaks there than at Michael Jackson’s funeral.” “Al spoke like he was at Michael Jackson’s funeral.” “He sang like he was at Michael Jackson’s funeral.” “She cried like she was at Michael Jackson’s funeral.” “The networks covered it like Michael Jackson’s funeral.”

I have not watched or read any of it in the MSM so I guess I am not sick of it. I got the news here on FR the day he died. Noted it. Read a few threads on him here on FR again and that’s it. Zero tv for me and apart from that some tabloid covers staring back at me while I wait in the checkout line. I no longer browse the tabs because I am listening to stuff on my ipod when I am in the checkout line.

Obama had MJ killed to distract from cap and trade

but on the bright side, we did not suffer through endless movie montage retrospectives. i mean when bob hope, or some other titan of movie classics goes there are weeks of those things played on a wide variety of channels. mj was mostly confined to news and music channels. don’t get me wrong i loved bob hope but weeks and weeks of his movies, retrospective clip shows, everyone and anyone who ever knew him or worked with him on talk shows day after day for over a month... excessive.

When you get tired of watching the outpouring for Michael Jackson, watch this. Unlike the Staples Center event, no tickets were required here, just American citizens in Georgia showing their respect for a fallen hero.

Killed in action the week before, the body of Staff Sergeant First Class John C. Beale was returned to Falcon Field in Peachtree City , Georgia , just south of Atlanta , on June 11, 2009. The Police escorted the procession to the funeral home in McDonough , Georgia . A simple notice in local papers indicated the road route to be taken and the approximate time. This was filmed during the procession by a State Trooper.

Nowadays one can be led to believe that America no longer respects honor and no longer honors sacrifice outside the military. Be it known that there are many places in this land where people still recognize the courage and impact of total self-sacrifice. Georgia remains one of those graceful places. The link below is a short travelogue of that day’s remarkable and painful journey. But only watch this if you wish to have some of your faith in people restored. Please share widely.

Here’s a video that is a must see. Some people still get it right.

WARNING: It is a long video, but oh so worth it.

P.S. I cried

WHAT Jackson coverage? I managed to avoid the whole stinking thing although I inadvertantly caught a couple minutes of the funeral extravaganza on TV when I went over to my Mom’s house to pick up her mail.

It was actually very easy to avoid. There were plenty of good shows on USA network, TNT, TBS, FX, History Channel, Military Channel, TV Land, Bravo, A&E, TCM, etc. In addition to my regular (self-employment) gig, there was plenty of wood to cut, split, and stack, as well as other household honey-do stuff, and a new Michael Connelly book I’ve been meaning to get to.

The Michael Jackson show was as easy to avoid as Ubama’s inauguration was. It’s really not that hard to avoid such crap if you want to. It is primarily a matter of shaking off the same natural morbid curiosity that makes people gape at bloody traffic accidents. Even a caveman could do it.

One reason that I left the USA is because most the population has reached the Peter Principle.

Yeah, he died. But since I don’t have TV or Radio and get all my news by pulling off the web, I only needed to read a part of a story to figure it out. I have gotten no more ooverage. ;)

“I think we should all send our condolences to the family for the tragic loss.”

The author lost me there and I stopped reading. Maybe I would give his suggestion a second thought if he said the same about our soldiers killed in action...

I am not a cold-hearted person by any means but after watching the daughter throughout the funeral and during her speech, it just did not seem genuine to me. I felt that the family put her up to it and coached her on how to cry. I did not see any tears and it all seemed like something that she was told she must do.

Not that she does not miss her Dad, just that I think the Jackson Family EXPLOITED her. I think the Jackson Family is going to destroy her one way or another.

Am I the only one who thinks this? I haven’t heard anyone even hint at this possibility anywhere.

Not at all. I haven’t seen one minute of it. One picture or one mention of his name and I change the channel.
