Alaska will be seeing less of Sarah Palin now that she is resigning as governor, but the lower 48 states will be seeing a lot more of her--not in the media capitals of New York or Los Angeles, but in smaller markets, including towns in New Hampshire, Iowa and other states that can give presidential hopefuls a leg up in a primary race.
Palin's support doesn't come from big-city elites, anyway. As one of them, Ann Marlowe, wrote in a column for Forbes.com last year, "Why Elite Women Hate Palin":
People who become writers and intellectuals and artists tend not to want power that badly or pursue it that obsessively, which is what makes us interesting and fun--and makes few of us household names. Success at the Palin level in politics or business takes a level of blinkered self-confidence that comes mainly to (a very few) men.
Suzanne Garment captured the cultural divide in her assessment of the Biden-Palin debate, recognizing that Palin's popularity comes from the fact that "her words and rhythms of speech really did mirror those of her audience."
In terms of numbers, and especially in the numbers that count--those of likely Republican primary voters, there are many on Palin's side of the divide. Conservatives growing angrier every day at Obama's leadership are hungry for a strong voice. Many of these voters are already proud Palin supporters or at least willing to listen.
In person, Palin wins over right-leaning audiences. Away from the pulls of Alaska politics (including continuing ethics investigations), she will have many opportunities to build on that support. Reihan Salam analyzed that Palin appeal in a December column:
Highbrow Republicans and suburban moderates wince at the merest mention of her name. Despite her obvious political skills, conservative thinkers like David

Oh are they scared of her.
I listened to her entire announcement. It was honorable, it was direct, and it punctuated the insane politics of our day...it also punctuated her personal commitment to fight, and to do so when it would not distract further from her job as Governor and the foundation she has built there.
I am proud of her and support her. She is a great American.
I think Sarah has just turned, like a fed-up mama Bear, on her detractors. She has put things in order, she has left them in the hands of capable people, and she has now turned to face her enemies directly.
...and I think they are going to be sorry. We have smelled the fear in them for a long time. Good on her!
I believe she will assist others greatly in 2010, and will run herself in 2012...and she has my full support.
GO SARAH GO!

Why Elite Women Hate Palin? Simple.
They are AFRAID of her.
Let me be the first to second that, and say I hope you’re right... for everyone’s sake.
Sarah’s leaving office to pursue wealth, not higher office.
Someone who resigns amid scandals and investigations has no chance of getting elected to anything again.
At least not as a Republican.
Sarah! you’re the poet in our hearts!!!
Rock the day, girl! Rock the day!
Well conidering the complaints and investigations just keep coming then by your logic she would have to stay in office the rest of her life to prove she has a chance to be elected to higher office.
Just what position do you hold in the Romney campaign...?
She knows - in 2 years, much of the country is going to be screaming from Obama’s stupid socialist schemes.
She will be there to kick him - real hard!
BWAHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAAA.....You've been watching too many Presstitutes from the MSM.
I believe her reasons for resigning are exactly as she stated.
You are a brain dead idiot. What are you afraid of? Saving our nation? She has more brains and class in her little finger than your hero ossama obammy has in his entire body.
Would not want you to be short any hours..

Uh, not goin' there...
;-)
now that she is not governor and maybe has a little more free time, I hope she sues the PANTS off David Talentless Letterman.
Maybe this is the HOPE AND CHANGE we’ve been waiting for?
