Poet's Notebook: Let's Give Everyone a Gun

Oddly enough, Americans were rocked and shocked by three recent shootings — at the military recruitment center in Little Rock, the abortion clinic in Wichita and the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. I write “oddly” because these are little red droplets in the bucket of American society. We’ve lost our way in some violent wilderness, where we can’t see the forest for the trees.

Everyone knows that over 3,000 civilians were killed on 9/11, and over 4,000 soldiers killed in the Iraq war — but how many know that America regularly has over 16,000 murders per year, often over 20,000? Among so-called civilized countries, we’re the world champions.

This isn’t new news, and it’s clear that the suggested solutions aren’t going to happen. We’re simply not going to limit our ability to get hold of any kind of weapon: that seems to be unAmerican.

So here’s my idea. As all the wisest self-help gurus advise, it’s healthiest to go with the flow (a rather literal flow, in this case). Since we can’t beat the NRA or the gun-suppliers, we should do the only sensible thing, and join them.

My proposal is to arm every man, woman and child in the United States.

There are obvious gains from this plan. First, it recognizes the way we’re going; it’s like taking off a girdle, loosening a belt. We’re arming the world, anyway; charity should begin at home. And the NRA, having run a multi-million dollar campaign against Obama, fearful he’d reinstitute the ban on assault weapons (which expired in 2004), could use the saved money to set up universal training sessions.

Second, this could be a major part of the stimulus plan. The only things America seems to make well these days are weapons — one of our few successful exports,

I like the idea.

Of course I’ll be ducking low until all the idiots are weeded out. The hard way. It shouldn’t take more than 3 years.

I want one of those Suburbans with the roof turret gun as seen in the You Tube video. That and plenty of Ammo Stamps to allow me to economically fire it for a few minutes a week.

2007 data...most recent complete from FBI:

"16,929 total Murders & NON-Negligent Homicides"

"In 2007, offenders used firearms in 68.0 percent of the Nation’s murders, 42.8 percent of robberies, and 21.4 percent of aggravated assaults."

In 2006, 42,642 people were killed in traffic accidents, a drop of 868, or roughly 2 percent, from 2005.

Some 41,059 people were killed in highway crashes, down by more than 1,600 from 2006. It was the fewest number of highway deaths in a year since 1994, when 40,716 people were killed.

Driving kills 3.5 times as many people as as are murdered with a gun; when will this puke call for banning driving?

I think you might have a mistake in your numbers. I think that 16000 murders per year is ALL murders. Not gun murders.

16,000 is the total for all murders, and probably includes manslaughter type offenses as well.

The murder rate peaked in 1994. In 2007 there were approx. 7,000 fewer murders than 1994, even though the population increased by more than 30 million.

"...but how many know that America regularly has over 16,000 murders per year, often over 20,000?"

Even if your "20,000" figure were true, that would only be 1 in 15,000. And most of the US murders by far happen in the cities where firearms are unconstitutionally outlawed.

"Among so-called civilized countries, we’re the world champions."

That's a lie.

"My proposal is to arm every man, woman and child in the United States."

Thats nearly already done. Most of those not accounted for have stolen firearms.

16,929 total; 68% gun. A bit over `11,000 gun murders.

How many people die due to medical malpractice each year? About 150,000?

How many die in car accidents? Over 30,000 a year?

I know this guy is being totally facetious, but I like his idea!! This whiny leftist has come over to our side. I won’t call him a liberal, because Thomas Jefferson was a liberal. We know from his writings that Jefferson loved firearms and had a huge collection.
