The remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) was quite a disappointment to sci-fi fans. Viewers gave it just over 2 stars at Amazon.com. Thats slightly worse than Assignment: Outer Space (1960) and more than a point and a half behind Kronos (1950). If you havent heard of either, dont worry about it. The point is that there are probably better movies at the outdoor even if youre not planning to watch the movie.

Is that a remake of the remake or a remake of the original?
We saw it - it sucked.
No, it’s a suggested sequel to the remake. Stargate SG-1 takes on the arrogant greenies - who, as we’ve suspected all along, are from another planet.
Most ‘remakes’ don’t do well.
The new cast tries to emulate the original, and they fail.
The problem is that Hollow-wood is devoid of new ideas, so they have to revert to old scripts, add some glitz and glitter and graphics, and hope it works. It usually doesn’t.
I saw it... it wasn’t THAT bad...
It diverted slightly from the original plot, and the whole thing about killing off everything and “saving the animals” was over the line. But the message of self sacrifice was good.
They could have done a lot more with the robot.
Klatu (Reaves) could have been a little more vulnerable and less “Spock-like”.
I didn’t like the “form of destruction” (cheap), but the overall effects were good.
3.5 stars
For a more realistic view of the future, check out the 1951 Quo Vadis. To understand California, watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers--the old Kevin McCarthy flick. Unappreciated in their own time were the prophetic qualities of these two movies.
Didn’t see the remake, but I understand it had a typically leftist, Hollywood bleeding-heart plot-line. The earth being destroyed by polluters or some such.
Yes - this review addresses that.
In the original, Klatu makes reference to God as a supreme Great Spirit.
Of course the “more original” re-make of the re-make will conveniently overlook that little point.
Do you think there will be a remake of the remake?
The remake was so stupid...A race of beings who have achieved interstellar travel and all sorts of wondrous technology kill the electricity on the entire planet earth and throw all of humankind into the dark ages because they say we are hurting the planet? Dumbest friggin plot ever conceived...
So there is going to be a remake of a really bad movie....and hollywood wonders why they are losing money.
“Kronos” was a classic.
Aliens send a giant-sized, monolithic energy collector (Kronos) to suck up all Earth’s energy; scientists are sent to the Pacific coast of Mexico, where Kronos lands underwater. Kronos eventually surfaces, and goes on a rampage on land-and we get to see the brave Mexican Air Force in action!!!!
Ok, so the effects were pretty cheap, but it’s still one of my favorites...great summer fare, and it’s out on dvd!
Michael Rennie can rest easy...
Sucked. The aliens killed hundreds of millions of people then tell us we should change our ways.
Much in the same vein as “The Happening” (2008). Except in that one, plant life kills off humans.
What a supreme egoist you have to be to think you can improve on a classic. Does nobody in Hollywood have an original idea?

The new one was horrible.
