'Adios Chavez,' Gas Station Owner Dumps Chavez Citgo Brand
Publius' Forum ^ | 6/28/09 | Warner Todd Huston

A smart gas station owner from Wadsworth, Illinois has given up his Citgo franchise and re-opened as a Shell station. To celebrate he posted a sign that gives Hugo Chavez a wonderful sendoff. "Adios Chavez," it reads.

For the last five years I have personally boycotted any Citgo gas station. Citgo, you see, is wholly owned by Petróleos de Venezuela S.A., which itself is wholly owned by Venezuela's despotic President Hugo Chavez and his puppet government. I have written several times in the past about this fact (here, and here) and have wondered why more Americans haven't talked about boycotting this foreign hatemonger's gas stations?

YES< I refuse to pull into a Citgo, we use Sam’s Club gas here in Phoenix and the prices are just about rock bottom for anywhere (2.55 yesterday for unleaded!)

Unfortunately, the oil is still coming from hostile nations no matter what the sign says.

He should have started selling the American Marathon along with Shell but it was a good move by him anyhow.

Wifey and I returned two weeks ago from a month (7000 miles) toodling around the entire southern tier of this country.......and I was pleased to see that the vast majority of CITGO stations were - for whatever reason - 10 to 20 cents per gallon above their neighbors.

It certainly would be great if this idea spread to other gas stations to reorganize under a non-Citgo operation. This is how true democratic change occurs. Through pointed targeted and effective boycotts for those products and countries that our enemies or their countries produce or own.

You said — Unfortunately, the oil is still coming from hostile nations no matter what the sign says.

Yeah, and as long as people (and/or representatives) in this country continue to avoid nuclear power, then we’ll always be beholding to Chavez....

Bad.

“Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and former Cuban leader Fidel Castro have both expressed support for Zelaya, who insisted on holding a referendum on constitutional reform on Sunday even though the Supreme Court ruled it illegal and everyone from the military to Congress and members of his own party opposed it.”

The interesting thing about nuclear power these days, is that it no longer takes a big nuclear power plant — or — teams of technicians to operate. It can operate with no one in attendance and only a guard detail for the premises...

We should install these all over the country...

You can bury them in the ground and *forget them* until you refuel many years later...

True. It's a good thing the energy bill passed in the house. Now if the Senate will get some guts and pass it, too. Then, for the sake of our national security, we can get off our addiction to foreign oil and on to more dependable energy sources.

Yeah..., that’s what most people think when you mention nuclear power...

They need to get “up to date” on the latest information.

1,201 pages and they didn't even read it. I wonder what they are planning on doing about our last few factory jobs being shipped out to countries with no pollution controls.

Drill here, drill now.

Build more oil refineries.

Build and lease more nuclear power plants.

This would be a good start on our way to energy independence.
