The simple fact is that college education can really help with finding job IF, and it’s bif IF they are going into a career where it would be relevant - i.e. medicine, engineering, or other technical fields.
I think way too many people go to college, for ‘the experience’ of getting wasted and stds I guess. The biggest thing is teaching kids logic and rhetoric, I had to sit through a few gen-ed courses taught by the usual liberal suspects.
Being able to identify both the factual errors and misrepresentation and logical flaws due to the education my mom gave me in history, logic, and rhetoric hardened my convictions more than anything and I was able to effectively defend my beliefs even against professors - fortunately they were not so vindictive as other cases I’ve read about.
Still, I think there is no reason to simply surrender academia and fields requiring advanced education to the liberals. I would like very much, when I’m 40 or 50 or so to be a teacher for undergrads or highschoolers. I can only imagine how nuts I will drive the other faculty! :-D
I was a high school teacher. Currently, just a sub and probably going back full time soon. Depending on the district and area, you’ll probably be in good company.
In my content area, history, we teach facts and logical/analytical thinking. Much depends on the district (and location). It varies State to State, District to District.
Not everyone is cut out for college nor should it be the end all. College is not for everyone.
“I think way too many people go to college, for the experience of getting wasted and stds I guess. “
Really? People are willing to spend $80,000 upwards for the “experience of getting wasted and stds?” Just how many stds occur with college students? I’m interested in those numbers. And is it limited to college campuses or a general problem?
