Gov. Says GM Wants Large Upfront Payment (TN Gov.)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Gov. Phil Bredesen is expressing doubt that Tennessee can afford the financial demands from General Motors to select its Spring Hill plant to build a new small car.

The Democratic governor said Thursday that it became clear in meetings with GM officials this week that the automaker wants a large cash payment from Tennessee to pick Spring Hill. The other sites competing for the work are in Orion, Mich., and Janesville, Wis.

Tennessee's incentive packages are usually tilted toward long-term tax incentives, training and infrastructure improvements. Bredesen says the state doesn't have "a lot of spare money available to make large upfront payments."

The governor wouldn't specify how much money GM was asking for, but said that hundreds of millions of dollars would be "the low end of the range."

I think I’d have to tell them to take a hike (to put it nicely).

I wonder why they won’t build in South Dakota? SD has no state or corporate taxes.

0bama said the Feds would not contribute any money directly to GM and Chrysler.
That leaves indirect money flowing thru the States and other middle men

Phil Bredesen seems to be one of the few Democrats that have understanding of economics and finance. Too bad there as so few in Washington that have grasped the concept. The glare of power has blinded them.

If I was the TN. Gov., I would be hard pressed to take anything coming from Obama Motors as genuine, even if it meant the loss of much needed jobs. Chicago Politics as Usual Ping.

Well look at that. Just last year Okla County was coerced into buying the GM plant in south Okla. City. The voters were told it needed to be purchased and GIVEN to Tinker AFB. In a special election that is just what happened.

Tinker spokesperson said they did not want nor needed that plant. Our Sen. Inhofe made a plea to voters that this was a good thing to do. So the dumb voters did.

I have not been by that plant and don't know what it is used for, but this was a scam.

Now GM is looking for another place to open up????. This just does not make any sense, but nothing anymore does.

For these companies to come in and basically BLACKMAIL a city, town or state to do whatever they say or else, is criminal. We are seeing it with sports teams as well.

A nickle here a nickle there in taxes what the heck, but it never ends and the ignorant voters continually go along with this, but what the H_eck,_ do I know?

Phil also is hamstrung by the constitutional requirement that we have a balanced budget.

Tennessee should not bite. Too many folks will never, ever buy a GM or Chrysler product again.
