Meet Kavya Shivashankar, the National Spelling Bee winner. She can spell really well for a 7th grade girl, which for some reason got me thinking about Barack Obama. Unfortunately our president is not the brightest student. She won the National Spelling Bee for correctly spelling Laodicean after spelling a whole bunch of really long words correctly before. Kavya does not make rookie mistakes and is testament to the high-achieving American Dream.
As a brief biography, Kavya Shivashankar is 13-years old from Blue State Kansas in small town of Olathe. This was her forth year in a row at the National Spelling Bee, having finished in the top ten each prior year. She won $40,000 in prize money, a trophy bigger than Ted Kennedy, and ironically will be visiting the White House.
Her family is originally from India. Her younger sister is named Vanya, her mother Sandy and father Mirle. Kavya plays violin while enjoying bicycling and swimming. Basketball is not one of her top priorities. Read more here and here.
Ironically the Laodicean definition is lukewarm or indifferent in religion or politics, which brings us back to the subject of our president, who has a long history of indifference to education. In his famous self-indulgent biography, he confessed to a cocaine habit while in high school, an incurious mind, and deservedly graduated with poor grades. Later his college grades were apparently so bad that he became the first presidential candidate in recent history to refuse their release.
So while Kavya Shivashankar epitomizes achievement in American education, the president subsequently compiled a long list of embarrassing gaffes. Cherish the memories of Dan Quayles potato-e. What a contrast!

But the magic negro can speak Austrian.....
in all 57 states
Laodicean, a good word for the American Episcopal Church
It was the only word I could correctly spell!
I blame the California Public School system for that, though. And homebrew.
That's okay...ESPN couldn't spell either...(see "Educatonal")
ive read it before and forgot too! it means members of that church in greece, revelation chapt 3 says they were indifferent to their faith
God has a really good sense of humor. Whenever someone makes fun of someone else's inability to spell, the accuser always winds up misspelling something. It's that Invisible Third Hand on the keyboard.
i’m a little concerned is there enough diveristy in the competition? Do we need to allow for disadvantaged kids to have a chance to win easier words?
