The new fuel mileage standards the Obama administration is proposing have set bankrupt Detroit car manufacturers on a war path with the consumers that they need to buy their product. Americans will not buy the expensive hybrid or electric cars that will be needed to meet these stringent new standards unless gas taxes are significantly raised or the government subsidizes every vehicle.

Perhaps this asinine move was made to spur shoppers to snap up SUVs and trucks from the defunct dealers that BO shut down. Hopefully, our children will buy new large vehicles while they still have the chance, so our grandchildren will have a safe means of traveling.
I’m at war. I’ve never purchased a Ford or a foreign nameplate. I could buy from one of the orphaned dealers - it would be a good deal I’m sure and I would be bailing out the one who deserved it. I’m not concerned about warranty - I’ll get service from my Firestone dealer in the neighborhood. Parnell has been good to me for 23 years.

The government will give huge tax breaks to subsidize the cars. They will continue to do so for as long as Democrats are in power.
Detroit is hoping they will get relief by 2016, after sinking government money (you don’t think they will pay the research themselves, do you?) into efforts to catch or pass the foreign companies.
If you ever wanted a muscle car now is the time to buy one. They may never be built again. Personally, I would opt for a 2010 Shelby GT500.
