Obama Stuck in a GITMO Box
The Provocateur ^ | 05/20/2009 | Mike Volpe

If the stimulus is considered President Obama's biggest legislative victory of his young presidency, then today's Senate vote not to allow funds to build a new facility must be considered his biggest legislative defeat. In fact, it's rather stunning that the Democratic legislature has so thoroughly rejected the platform of their very popular president.

The vote today is of monumental consequence. By voting not to allow for funding to build any new prisons, the Congress has stopped any such plans until October 1st at the earliest. This vote is for the budget that runs out September 30th. President Obama made the proclamation that GITMO would be closed by January 21st, 2010. This vote makes that proclamation nearly impossible. Furthermore, in the same vote, the Senate also ruled out moving any of these folks into the United States.

Good! Atleast there are some legislator’s that still liten to their voters. We all know that it is the hard left that wanted this and that the malority of American’s undestand that 99% of these people are not just poor souls who got caught up in a round up.I hope this is the first of many defeats Obama suffers. The next should be climate change and after that card check.

It’s more than a legislative defeat. What Obama and Holder proposed is not doable.

You said — Good! Atleast there are some legislator’s that still liten to their voters.

Well..., when the legislators realized that the Gitmo gang wouldn’t be released and sent home, but kept here in the U.S., those legislators realized that they didn’t want them in their own backyards... LOL...

So, that changed their minds... :-)

It is what Obama wanted. Once he found out that the Europeans and others were not interested in taking any of the prisoners, Obama had to find a facing saving way out. This is it. Congress is preventing Obama from fulfilling his promise, but rest assured, in tomorrow’s big speech, he will say that he is not giving up.

As soon as the Dems who voted against this are offered the amount of money in earmarks they are really after, this will turn around quickly.

Is there anyone on FReeRepublic who doesn’t think that this was an orchestrated move to save 0bamah from having to close Gitmo? He has just arranged to have an excuse to keep it open. It has nothing to do with legislators listening or being fiscally responsible.

Supposedly it is also illegal not that the law means anything to Hussein.

Looks like FBI’s Robert Mueller smacked Obama down today. I used to think Mueller was a Beltway politico but maybe the law and Constitution means something to Mueller. Good for Mueller.

I keep reminding people that despite what Obama said, he did not order it closed. He said he did, but he didn’t. He extended. The same with the supposed CIA safehouses. He said he ordered them closed; in actual fact he extended them. Its all in the fine print.
