The "indefatigable" governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin recently put pen to paper (wonder who actually helped her decipher the contractual fine print) on a book deal to write her memoirs, with HarperCollins. Now when I read this earlier in the week, I couldn't help but have a cynical grin on both sides of my face as I thought "how far this country had indeed come" as we now seem well placed to honor and indeed reward mediocrity. The hypocrisy of this was all in the irony of how the right was so keen to disparage and berate the accomplishments of then Senator Barack Obama as they touted the Alaskan governor's "accomplishments" (her success at effectively watching Putin rise as he goes over Alaska in particular).
There were a lot of independents and left of center folks, as well as some intellectual conservatives, that felt particularly befuddled about that comparison as they wondered how you could compare an individual who barely graduated from college and basically runs a welfare state in Alaska, to a dual Ivy league honor graduate and successful legislator/author from a much larger state. I, on my part felt insulted but not surprised as there seems to be a recent trend toward the dumming down of America. Why you might say? Well, you may want to ask yourself why John Kerry's intellect and eloquence cast him as an elitist and almost cost Barack Obama the White House also, as he had to resort to bowling and drinking beer to show how much he was actually "down with the Hillbillies."
Governor Palin is an unmitigated disaster and an absolute disgrace. That an individual seeking the second highest office in the most powerful nation on earth and being just a heart beat away from it, could not answer basic economic and political questions put to her nor articulate her opinions on even the most rudimentary aspects of the issues of the day, was quite telling. Not only is she a failure at governance, but an even worse one as a parent, going by stories that have been not only well documented, but also played themselves out in the public eye.
The video below is kind of a lighhearted moment aimed at poking fun at this never ending horror show, with regard to her soon-to-be published memoirs. Oh how I miss the days when you actually had to accomplish something to even "have your picture taken", much less author a memoir. I guess Carrie Prejean's memoir on redefining beauty from an "enhanced perspective" is next. Look out, here comes the Bimbo parade!
