Obama: More Traffic Cameras Needed to 'Monitor' People
Blog, Newsy, and Washington Times ^ | 5/15/09

Peter Hudler FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON- In an "off-the-record" conversation with reporters, President Barack Obama unveiled a plan to distribute traffic cameras in moderately populated residential and commercial areas in order to 'monitor' the people who live and work there.

The conversation was leaked to the media this afternoon. "People drive fast, people drive poorly, and people die," the President said in the discussion. "We now have cameras at traffic lights to prevent this and catch those who break the law. But we could do so much more.

"Think about the possibilities if we expand the traffic cameras. At every light, we could monitor bad drivers and at every light we can lower crime. The benefits are large."

The President then paused. "But even those possibilities are short-sighted. If we are able to improve the technology behind these surveillance devices, we can observe anyone. Anyone who breaks the law and everyone on the street can be viewed. The drop in crime will be astounding."

What’s the problem? If you have nothing to hide, and are not doing anything illegal, you should welcome this.

If you don’t approve of this, you are quite possibly an anarchist. Us conservatives simply love an overreaching law enforcement machine. Don’t agree?... go to the DU.

/end sarcasm

The FEDERAL government should in no way even be discussing this!!! Solution is simple though:

Remember, NEVER drive your car near the cameras when you do this. Too many cameras watching the cameras.

Someone a while back posted a link to a site that shows how the Brits deal with traffic cameras. It had many pics of tires thrown around the top and lit off with gasoline. lol

I believe they use diesel. And yes, you can find lots of them on youtube.

I believe they lose over 400 cameras a year.

Late 2001 through 2004, such sentiments would not have been far off the mark (with but a twist - for TEH TERRISTS!!1). Even last year, I am sure many bots would be trumpeting this sort of thing if it McRino v 1.911 pushing it.

I am glad the GOP is regaining its sanity and is again trying to be a party warm to individual liberty and small government.

I realize this is a baseless, stupid story trying to be funny...

But if you want to eliminate half the crime in this country, you only need one camera, aimed at the desk in the Oval Office.

Satire indeed. But the inspiration for this piece is deadly serious and well worth reading.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/apr/05/the-traffic-camera-scam/

Personally, I have no problem with the proliferation of security cameras in public areas, though I prefer to see them owned and operated by private parties (as most of them are — when crimes are caught on camera, it’s nearly always a camera operated by a private business). But per the WT article, the arguments against traffic cameras used as automated ticket-issuing systems is more powerful and well-researched than I would have imagined. Traffic cameras may a good idea in some areas for the purpose of providing evidence to convict people who cause major property damage, serious injury, and death via their criminal driving acts, and may also be useful in identifying and locating cars used in abductions or other escapes from crime scenes. But not for issuing tickets in situations where there has been no harm.
