Swine Flu, Rahm Emmanuel, and the Creation and Milking of a Crisis: Health Care Reform

Rahm Emmanuel, Pres. Obama's chief of staff, is known as a strategist, manager, and organizer of considerable ability. For the blindly partisan, this will make them see red. For those who try to fairly evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of an opponent, it will be a point that makes them pause.

As he was preparing to take his place in the Obama Administration, Emmanuel is quoted as saying that politicians can have tremendous success manipulating a crisis, even if it is a manufactured crisis.

Swine Flu is a serious illness. If it were to begin a rapid spread, it would certainly be a crisis. The US would clearly have a serious crisis on its hands if this strain were to go to epidemic levels. Just today there is a report that a young child in Texas has died of the Swine flu strain. However, the overall known number of infections is still very low, and the current stage of infection is "Stage 4 Alert."

Rahm Emmanuel statement, in any case, has made it difficult to trust any statements by our current administration. If the official position of the president's chief of staff is to manipulate crises for political purposes when they become known, how is a citizen to view this Swine Flu alert?

Hopefully, there is a rational way to distinguish between necessary governmental actions and political manipulation of a crisis.

It seems to this writer that necessary actions will relate to here and now medical actions that reasonable people know should be taken.

It also seems that any reference to any liberal political objectives of Rahm Emmanuel or President Obama should be exposed for the cynical manipulations that they would be. Any references to national health care, in particular, would seem out of line. Beyond that, one might view with suspicion any attempted connections to national security or homeland security or to increasing our already historically inflated budget.
