The CDC's National Center for Health Statistics released the findings of its analysis of nearly 99 percent of all birth records reported by 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. Of the record 4,317,119 babies born in 2007, 1,372,844 were delivered via Cesarean section. The c-section rate rose 2 percent in 2007, to 31.8 percent, marking the 11th consecutive year of increase and another record high for the United States according to the CDC.

Hyperbole much?
jeeze, what’s with the title?
I think this is partially due to John Edwards. The lawsuits that made him rich dealt with cerebral palsy and claims that it was induced by birth canal issues that the doctor did not take care of. Thus if there is any question, doctos practice defensive medicine and order a C-section.
Well Alex
when the baby’s heart rate is down and dropping and Mom’s blood pressure is through the roof, I’ll take “gutted like a fish...”
what’s with the hysteria in the title?
n find nothing about “c-section” or “caesarean” in the linked file.
Silly title, geez.
If they don't and there is a complication leading to personal harm, the trial lawyers will push the case that the doctor “did not do everything they could.”
C-section (surgery) is the ultimate “I did everything I could” defense.
I know someone who had a very large baby (nearly 11 pounds). It was a complicated birth. The baby's shoulder got stuck. That doctor said that if the woman was to have another baby and the baby appeared large not to “tempt fate twice.”
In such a situation, a C-section was a no-brainer. Anyone who would have pushed for birth because it is “more natural” or “more organic” or whatever tribal argument they offer, are probably sympathetic to those who recommend only one square of toilet paper.
“whats with the hysteria in the title?”
Some OB’s are calling for a 100% C-section rate. As it has steadily climed the past ten years by 50%, and the vast majority of those surgeries done for bogus reasons, some of us have some deep concerns about vaginal birth being lost in the process.
We can’t have a rational conversation about health care without addressing the facts about birth. Fact is, most women are in fact gutted like a fish for no medical reason, with tremendous costs to the family - financial and otherwise - and/or the taxpayer.
This is a blight on our society. I like to use visual language when making a point - if you will take a sec to watch the vid, the mother is in fact being vivisected. Sometimes that fact is left out of the discussion.
Jenny
If it is now PC to re-evaluate every C-section because statistics suggest “abuse”, just wait until we have national socialized medicine and some droid in the Fed has to approve each C-section as medically necessary
“when the babys heart rate is down and dropping and Moms blood pressure is through the roof, Ill take gutted like a fish...”
that is exactly happened to my wife. had to do an emergency C section back in 07
luckily everything turned out ok healthy daughter and healthy mom Thank God
THAT is when C-sections will become most dangerous, when they are regulated by the government, because they cannot be sued WHEN they screw up.
I have had a C-section and no way it’s a vivisection, i also had two vaginal births thereafter, VBACs. I think this is a bit histrionic. Moreover, with nationalized health care on the horizon, you have NOTHING to worry about; they aren’t going to pay for C-sections, they will have women die or lose babies in childbirth rather than incur the costs of surgery.
exactly.
I had a C section too and it saved 2 lives
i also think that those who haven’t had one, haven’t lived through circumstances that required one, don’t have as much credibility to speak to the issue. just my opinion.
True dat
Nothing better to help an opinion on the subject than having a doctor tell you they have minutes to get the baby out before likely brain damage or worse
