Despite the drubbing taken by American newspapers in recent months, the Tribune-Review has posted significant gains in circulation since 2007.
Average circulation for the Sunday Tribune-Review rose by 2,681 newspapers, or 1.4 percent, to 193,563 in 2008, according to unaudited figures recently filed with Audit Bureau of Circulations.
Since then, the Sunday Tribune-Review's average circulation for the six months ended March 31 increased by 1,084 to 193,507, or nearly 1 percent higher than a year ago. And average daily circulation for the six months ended March 31 jumped by 13,400 to 164,311, or almost 8.9 percent higher than the year earlier.
"That's astonishingly rare, especially among big-city papers," said Mark Fitzgerald, editor at large for Editor & Publisher magazine. "We've seen some small markets gain some circulation, but the big losses have been in the metro markets, in cities like Pittsburgh."
"That runs very counter to the trend in the industry," said John Morton, a veteran newspaper industry analyst. "Generally, Sunday circulation has been declining more than daily."

That’s good Salena. Seattle has had the Post Intelligencer go TU, and the Seattle Times can’t give away its liberal rag.
That’s good to read. How did the Post-Gazette do?
Operative word: Conservative.
‘.....according to unaudited figures ....’
That tells me this is wishful thinking on the part of the Trib, and a bit of PR, nothing more.
The Trib is definately the conservative of the 2 papers in Pittsburgh, and the fact Pittsburgh still has 2 dailies bucks hugely national trends. We are one of the few towns of this size left with 2 dailies. We also have a very large older population (more likely to read the paper).
The Post-Gazette like most of the left wing papers has lost any credibility due to its political activism. I don’t know what to write into this report other than perhaps the PG has finally gone so flakily left that even the old mill hunkies and their wives/widows can’t handle the drivel anymore and gone to the Trib? That’s purely speculation, I really have no idea what would be behind this.
Local papers will survive by focusing on LOCAL news.. simply pulling crap off the wire and printing it is useless anymore. Most everyone has read that long before the paper is printed.
Papers have to go local and/or go in depth. Both would be ideal, if they wish to stick around.
I cannot seem to find them in the ABC report, but still looking. Just thought it interesting that our paper, whose editorial page is conservative, gained readership. I am just a little proud at this moment, please excuse my big smile.
not really, check the ABC report.
I sent the Trib one new subscriber. She has gotten the P-G for years and now that neither paper has a sports writer that covers horse racing, I convinced her to cancel the P-G and buy the Trib as once in a awhile there is some racing news in it. Actually, I did it hoping that every person I can convince to not buy the P-G even if it’s for bird cage liner is one more nail in the coffin of that disgusting left-wing rag.
I am glad to see you are on our board Salena. Do you have a link to the ABC figures all I can find are the top 25. I would like to believe that it is because you are conservative but the NY Post is down big time.
exactly so. I love the PA Trib Review and I live in GA!
Since you are too modest to say it...allow me...it’s because of YOUR column, m’dear..
i am on my blackberry right now but if you go to editor and publisher’s website and put in Pittsburgh Tribune Review the third story that comes up has the data, the list the paper as Tribune Review, Greensburg (our flagship name)
:) you are sweet, thanks!
I’m in Pittsburgh on business. I’ve gotten this paper at my hotel room a couple of times, when they ran out of USAToday.
It is really a good paper. Presents the news well and has a conservative editorial page.
I read the Trib on a recent business trip ... Pittsburghers have more than the Steelers to be proud about.
Check the Tribs financial reports at the end of this year.
