Twitter U

Is Twitter the future of education?

If you’re Cole W. Camplese, director of education-technology services at Penn State, University Park, you might be in the “yes” column.

The prof apparently prefers to “teach in classrooms with two screens—one to project his slides, and another to project a Twitter stream of notes from students,” said Jeffrey Young in a Chronicle of Higher Education piece.

Responding to the claim that this might be distracting, he noted that the “additional layer of communication will make for richer class discussion.” Apparently his hope is that rather than descending into complete chaos, “the second layer of conversation will disrupt the old classroom model and allow new kinds of teaching in which students play a greater role and information is pulled in from outside the classroom walls....

Could be interesting, although I suspect it would lower itself into stupid humor.

My lib sister-in-law is a professor and involves Twitter in her classroom. Silly, but frankly, one of her lesser problems.

LOL. Don’t ask me. I’m definitely not the expert. Never used it myself.

My brother gives me the occasional update on his wife’s wacky hijinks.

I haven't used Twitter either. Apparantly, it is an adult phenomenon. I have several students and any time I mention Twitter, I get "What the heck isTwitter, anyway?"

Looks like it's actually celebrity driven. Not really sure. Kids like using their phones.

Twitter in the classroom

The students seem to like it...for the same reason that they'd love free beer and bongs in class. It's, like, hip and stuff.

Personally, I think it's a poor complement to more substantive forms of discussion. Imitation crab meat isn't ever going to be as good as the real thing.

Yeah, I guess it depends what is considered “hip.” Twitter to me seems like a way for people who aren’t hip to feel hip. It seems to have some practical use for tabloid celebrities. They actually generate press with their twittering. Maybe it’s my perspective these days, working with school kids, but I can tell you they have no clue what Twitter is. It seems to be an adult toy.

She’s cute, though. I’ve gotta admit that.
