There is a normal period of incubation during which time the carrier displays no symptoms, but can infect others.

What's the incubation time for this?

Freepers deeming it "MEXICAN SWINE FLU"

IMO, I don't care if it will do us any good or not, we need to DEMAND our borders be effectively secured, now.

I wonder about the effectiveness of biohazards in these days of international travel. Unleashing a swine flu in the U.S. would ultimately release it on the whole world, I’d guess, including the nation(s) that unleashed it in the first place.

The one that REALLY worries people is a potential flu virus that could sweep the world like the infamous Spanish flu virus of 1918. Given the transportation systems of today, a death toll in the 200+ million range worldwide from such a virus is not far-fetched.

At a global population of 6.7 billion and a fatality rate of 1 in 16, the Mexican Swine Flu could wipe out 418 million people.

The Mexican Swine Flu can be easily prevented (and treated) by Tamiflu or Relenza. It is highly airborne infectious and has perhaps a 2 day incubation. This young lad in New York just recovered with no problems.

transmission of influenza A (H5N1) by aerosols from geese to quails has been demonstrated in the laboratory

Aren't they supposed to stop animal testing in Europe? How would they do this type of testing? They actually say they are supposed to use human embryos. (sick)

I'd recommend reading “The Great Influenza.” Much of what caused it to spread so wildly was a lack of understanding on how to conduct quarantines. We were shipping soldiers to foreign ports out of camps that had outbreaks and spreading it. Same was happening with ships coming into the USA. Furthermore, what killed a lot of people were secondary infections that today could be easily treated with antibiotics. Not to say a pandemic is nothing to worry about, but it isn't quite the catastrophe people imagine it to be.
