Oh for his wit and wisdom now. We could sure use a Mike Royko.

Famous quotes:

Hating the (New York) Yankees is as American as pizza pie, unwed mothers, and cheating on your income tax”

The subject of criminal rehabilitation was debated recently in City Hall. It's an appropriate place for this kind of discussion because the city has always employed so many ex-cons and future cons.”

Oh you hit a nerve. I started reading Royko when I was in 7th grade and read him til his death. In fact, I remember how terrible I felt when he died. His columns were just hilarious - I remember laughing out loud regularly. I have two books on him.

Meanwhile, one of the columns I’ve been unable to find and it’s the one where the guy tries to cross the train tracks or something and he gets stuck on top of the train with his lunch bag....

Also, did you know that several years ago there was a movie with John Belushi and a brunette actress whose name I’ve forgotten (but she was big in the 80’s) and it was loosely based on Royko - it was pretty funny.

Royko was a gem. Isn’t John Kass supposed to be his “heir”? Is he any good?

Royko was the greatest columnist of all time. The way he wrote, it was as casually as him talking to you at the pub. Brilliant writer, truly the voice of the people.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve been trying to remember Mike Royko’s name for weeks now. Something in the news a few weeks ago caused me to think of a response to whatever it was about (Now I cannot remember what that was) that triggered a reflection of Mike Royko’s humor, and style. I wanted to post something about it, but couldn’t remember his name. SHEESH!!!

He was one of my favorites too. May he RIP. A great columnist.
