Vidal has long been known as one of the most prominent liberal public intellectuals of the 20th century.

According to “West Point and the Third Loyalty”, an article Vidal wrote for The New York Review of Books (October 18, 1973), he decided to be called Gore in honor of his maternal grandfather, Thomas Gore, Democratic senator from Oklahoma.

Gore Vidal’s mother was an actress and socialite who made her Broadway debut in Sign of the Leopard in 1928

She married Gene Vidal in 1922 and divorced him in 1935. She later married twice more; one husband was later the stepfather of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Hugh D. Auchincloss.

She was an alternate delegate to the 1940 Democratic National Convention.

Vidal was raised in Washington, D.C., where he attended Sidwell Friends School, then St. Albans School. Since Senator Gore was blind, the boy Vidal read aloud to him and was his guide. The senator’s steadfast isolationism contributed a major principle of Gore Vidal’s political philosophy, which is critical of foreign and domestic policies shaped by American imperialism.

Vidal has had affairs with both men and women. He was once in a relationship with bisexual novelist Anaïs Nin, as documented in her memoir The Diary of Anaïs Nin.

He was briefly engaged to Joanne Woodward, before she married Paul Newman; after eloping, the couple shared a house with Vidal in Los Angeles for a short time. In 1950, he met his long-term partner Howard Austen.

Besides his politician grandfather, Vidal has other connections with the Democratic Party: his mother Nina married Hugh D. Auchincloss, Jr., who later was stepfather of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. Gore Vidal is a fifth cousin of Jimmy Carter, and a distant cousin of Al Gore.

As a political activist, in 1960, Gore Vidal was an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Congress (running as Eugene Gore), losing an election in New York’s 29th congressional district, a traditionally Republican district on the Hudson River.

Vidal is a member of the advisory board of the World Can’t Wait organization, a left-wing organization seeking to repudiate the Bush administration’s program, and advocating the impeachment of George W. Bush for war crimes.

Vidal contributed an article to The Nation in which he expressed support for Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, citing him as “the most eloquent of the lot” and that Kucinich “is very much a favorite out there in the amber fields of grain”.

RCP calls for the armed overthrow of the U.S. government!

From the website of the Revolutionary Communist Party (revcom.us or rwor.org) :

"Create Public Opinion, Seize Power: We are preparing minds and organizing forces for the time when there is a major crack in the system, whenever it comes and wherever it comes from: an opening that makes it possible to bring the future Revolutionary Army of the Proletariat (R.A.P.) into the field and wage a revolutionary armed struggle that actually has a chance of winning.

And we have said that building our party itself is the most important part of organizing forces for revolution. This is true now, and it is true looking forward to the creation of that future R.A.P. and the waging of that armed struggle.":

I knew JFK, says Gore Vidal, and believe me Obama’s the better leader

In Vidal’s opinion, “he’s our best demagogue since Huey Long or Martin Luther King”.

I ask if he thinks Obama has a similar charisma to that of John F Kennedy, whom Vidal got to know because he was related to his wife, Jackie.

“I never believed in Jack’s charisma,” Vidal says shortly. JFK, he believes, was “one of our worst presidents”; Bobby, his brother, was “a phoney, a little Torquemada”; and their father, Joseph, was “a crook – should have been in jail”.

So much for Camelot. “But Jack had great charm,” he adds. “So has Obama. He’s better educated than Jack. And he’s been a working senator. Jack never went to the office – he wanted the presidency and his father bought it for him.”

In his view, McCain is “a goddamned fool. He was on television talking about mortgages, and it was quite clear he does not know what a mortgage is. His head rattles as he walks”.

However, in Vidal’s eyes, McCain is just a symptom of the real malaise affecting America today: the cynical subversion of the US constitution. “The Bush people”, he says, “have virtually got rid of Magna Carta and habeas corpus. In a normal republic I would probably have raised an army and overthrown them. It will take a hundred years to put it all back.”

By now he has worked himself up to a crisp fury: “Those neocons, lawyers, the big corporations – worse than that, extremists – want to get rid of the great power of oversight of the executive. See what they’ll try to do to Obama. They’re crooks. They’re just gangsters. They are the enemy of the United States. There’s no such thing as a war on terrorism. It’s idiotic. There are slogans. It’s advertising, which is the only art form we’ve invented and developed. It’s lies.”

No question, he’s a vile, hateful little man. He actually ran for Congress almost 4 decades ago in NY. He fits in well with the moonbat rodents of today.

The references I’ve seen is that his full name is Eugene Luther Gore Vidal, Jr.

Vidal moved here, to this mansion in the Hollywood Hills, in 2003, because of its proximity to the Cedars-Sinai hospital. Howard Austen, his companion of 53 years, died of cancer in the same year. The two men had spent the previous 25 years in Ravello, near Naples, at Vidal’s spectacular villa, La Rondinaia (The Swallow’s Nest.)

he was narrowly defeated as a Democratic candidate for Congress in 1960, and refused to accept a safe seat four years later “because I realised my true motive was vanity”.

But you never lose the sense that his temper (”no gentle affair at best”) is a bomb waiting to go off.

William F Buckley – “Hitler,” as Vidal describes him, “without the charm.” Buckley compared anti-Vietnam war demonstrators to Nazis.

“As far as I’m concerned,” Vidal told him, “the only pro- or crypto-Nazi I can think of is yourself.”

“Now listen, you queer,” Buckley replied. “Stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I’ll sock you in your goddamn face. I was in the infantry in the last war.”

“You were not,” Vidal replies.

“I was.”

“You were not.”

Eugene Luther Gore Vidal was born in West Point, the only child of Eugene Luther Vidal and Nina Gore. He was raised in Washington DC. When he was 10, his parents divorced; his relationship with his alcoholic mother, which ended in 1957 (she died 21 years later) seems to have been at once unsuitably intimate, in terms of her personal disclosures to him, and thoroughly poisonous.

Gore Vidal had at least one heterosexual relationship as a youth, but has written far more about his great love, a schoolmate called Jimmie Trimble. An outstanding athlete, Trimble was killed in action in June 1945, aged 20. “His sweat smelled of honey,” Vidal wrote, “like that of Alexander the Great.”

Vidal has consistently argued that the term “homosexual” has no validity, because human sexuality is too complex and diverse to be reduced to binary terms. This was a nuance lost on publications such as The New York Times, which refused to review his next five novels. He retains a special contempt for the paper, “which never found a well it could not poison”.

He was once quoted as saying he had had 1,000 lovers by the time he was 25, a statistic that adds a certain credibility to his 1960 election slogan “You get more with Gore.”

Vidal met Howard Auder in New York in 1950. “Where, exactly?” Vidal tells me that he can’t remember. “People have said it was at The Everard Baths.” [For decades Manhattan’s most famous gay bath-house, it burned down in 1977.]

When the two men began living together, Vidal’s mother began complaining about her “pansy son and his Jew boyfriend because of whom she was not able to see her dearest friends”. She had by now added regular shots of morphine to her voracious intake of alcohol. The last time Vidal saw her was 1957, when he invited her to London. “I think she came to try and restore relations,” Vidal wrote. “That didn’t work. She took to the bottle. Then she started attacking Howard. I said: ‘I think you had better go.’ Later she wrote me a poison-pen letter and I wrote her and said: ‘I shall never, ever, see you again as long as you live.’”

“And you never did?” “No.”

“There are rumours that you have a daughter from a relationship with a woman living in Key West, Florida [in the 1950s]; are they true?”

“Possibly. I don’t believe so. The father was either me or a German photographer. I believe the mother is dead. The child was a girl. Every Christmas, I would receive ‘ a picture of them all around the tree, and there’s the little girl, looking like me. I could have a daughter, yes.”

“Have you tried to contact her?”

“No. Why would I?”

“Because you might have a sense of responsibility, which, in the age of DNA...”

“I sent her mother money for an abortion. Which she used to go to Detroit, where she found a rich man.”
