All readers of Ayn Rand's masterpiece, Atlas Shrugged, know its central question, "Who is John Galt?"
Written over half a century ago, it is clearly the greatest and most influential novel of the 20th century. Over six million copies have been sold, averaging 77,000 copies per year in the 1980s, 90,000 in the 1990s, 137,000 in the 00s - until recently.
200,000 copies were sold in 2008, and sales so far this year are at triple those of last year. This is because, according to the Ayn Rand Institute, "there are uncanny similarities between the plot-line of the book and the events of our day."

I tend to agree with the Randites, but it's all a little too L. Ron Hubbard for me.
“Atlas Shrugged” is not a fun read but if people are still reading English in 500 years this is one of the few books from the 20th century that will still exist.
He’s being tortured.
I read this years ago.
I had a business that did 4 million a year. It got to be so much hassle I shut it down and work by myself now.
I have a lot more time to do what I want.
I see others doing the same.
“Who is John Galt?”, will be prominently displayed on one of my signs at the tea-party, in front of the Capitol Building in Michigan. Also going to work in a sign saying FREE the REPUBLIC.
It is going to be a hoot!
Rand was a Platonist at heart. She lived not in the real world (like Aristotle did), but in Plato's world
You mean, like me and Middle Earth?
That's absurd.
“greatest and most influential novel of the 20th century”
That statement is rubbish.
Historic example. The Russians burned Moscow to keep it from being taken by Napoleon, Andrew Jackson slaughtered two thousand British to keep New Orleans from being burned.
What do you think is the most influential novel of the 20th century?
Milton Freedman’s “Free to Choose” to start.
If that doesn’t do it for you how about William F. Buckley’s “God and Man at Yale”.
There are plenty of people 'Gulching', as they say.
I've been giving it some serious thought myself..............
Free to Choose - that’s a novel?
That also isn’t a novel..... I think that other poster may have you on the “novel” requirement. Novels are fiction

“One of the methods used by statists to destroy capitalism consists in establishing controls that tie a given industry hand and foot, making it unable to solve its problems, then declaring that freedom has failed and stronger controls are necessary.” — Ayn Rand

Like Prince Charming he is a figure of myth that people wait for rather then rolling up their sleeves and getting to work themselves on their problems.
The "Great and Perfect Leader that shall unite us all" does not exist either. We have to work with what we have.
The sooner we learn this the better off we will be.
