Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean were released last month from federal prison after serving more than two years in solitary confinement for the non-fatal shooting of a Mexican drug smuggler. President Bush commuted the sentences of the two border guards Jan. 19 and his order went into effect yesterday. They had spent the last month in home confinement and are now finally free.
Glenn Beck has covered this story for years and was at the forefront of the movement to get President Bush to commute their sentences.
These two men are truly American heroes. Welcome back!

Sorry, they aren’t heros in my book. No disrespect intended but they were just doing their jobs and were persecuted by a corrupt justice system. There are victims and they are suffering unjustly.
Not every cop is a hero. It devalues the meaning of hero to call everyone a hero. Their wives come closer to the meaning after sticking with their husbands through all of this.
I agree with you about their wives, however, anyone who suffers for defending my freedom is a hero in my book.
If you don’t consider these two heroes, I really question your patriotism.
I believe that president Bush was correct in pardoning them. However, they were not doing their job. It was a bad shooting, and they covered up their actions.
Bush didn’t pardon them. He only commuted their sentences.
They are heroes to a lot of us. The did not deserve the treatment they received. Illegals are treated better than these men. I hope they make TRILLIONS in book deals, movies, mag stories, interviews etc. They should have been PARDONED period. What happened to these men is a disgrace and one thing I will never forgive in the Bush Adminstration.
Thank you for the correction.
“If you dont consider these two heroes, I really question your patriotism.”
That concerns me greatly.
“I believe that president Bush was correct in pardoning them. However, they were not doing their job. It was a bad shooting, and they covered up their actions.”
I thought he only commuted their sentences and did not pardon them.
I could see firing them or some other form of discipline. But jail for their actions was way too much. It also demonstrated there is very little discipline in that Border Patrol unit. Not a big surprise considering how they are treated.
You weren’t there, you may have shot too. I’ll take their word that it was justified.
PING!
RAMOS/COMPEAN Ping
Please freepmail me if you want on or off this list.
B.S.!
I suppose you are from the "must prove the perp didn't have a gun" crowd, even though he fled to Mexico which makes such an act impossible.
And they didn't cover a darn thing up. As such, all of those bogus charges were thrown out by the appeals court.
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
As to not doing their job; I would say anyone who tries to intercept an obvious illegal alien [and one whose appearance reeked of drug dealer, whether established or not] is performing their job with commitment. The earlier poster seems to have forgotten that when Ramos came on the scene, he was not aware of what transpired but only heard what he presumed was an exchange of gunfire.
As to not being heroes; I would not question a person's patriotism for saying that, but I would question their definition of hero. Anyone who straps on a gun in defense of a border that his own gov’t will not defend and whose fellow border guards had already been prosecuted for shooting their guns in defense of, is a cut above the rest of us. All law enforcement officers and fire and medical personnel are heroes to me until they demonstrate otherwise.
See ya, CCG
A jury of their peers didn’t.
Our jury system is stacked in favor of the defendant. Yet their defense lawyers couldn’t get one person to hold a reasonable doubt to their innocence. Your hitching your wagon to a dead horse. Still, two years is way too long to serve for what they did. OTH - I really don’t want either of them carrying guns and badges.
Considering the offense that Sutton and company launched on these two border patrol agents, along with the DHS OIG, the defendants and their amateur attorneys were far outmatched and NOTHING was stacked in their favor. The U.S. Attys office subjorned perjury, went to extremes to ensure evidence was not heard, and launched a PR campaign unseen in my memory (and that of many journalistic commentators). Sutton even went so far as to tell more than a handful of mistruths while testifying to the Senate committee. This should NOT be over — Sutton’s office should be investigated and prosecuted, IMO.
Are you sure that the “jury of their peers” got the straight scoop on the matter? Have you ever been in a potential gun fight situation, or an actual gun fight? Things often just aren’t as cut and dried as you seem to think.
These men have my undying respect for what they suffered for doing their jobs.
