While doing a google search on the Iditarod Dog Sled Race I found lots of links that mentioned Amateur Radio in some small way
This one caught my eye

Amateur Radio Week Printer Friendly
WHEREAS, amateur radio operators have a long and illustrious history of providing communications worldwide for people in need. From the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake and the 1996 Millers Reach Fire in Alaska, to the 2005 Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi, amateur radio operators have given willingly of their time, equipment, skills, and energy to benefit close neighbors and faraway strangers alike.
WHEREAS, amateur radio operators provide a public service and contribute to the quality of our communities. They are ever at the ready and have been present for the Iditarod, the Yukon Quest, the Mayors Midnight Sun Marathon, Walk for Hope, and many other public service events throughout the years all over Alaska.
WHEREAS, amateur radio operators mentor many young Alaskans who will grow up to contribute to advances in science and technical industries. Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley amateur radio operators sponsor electronic kit building at the bi-annual Alaska Girl Scout jamboree. Radio license classes are offered to grade school and high school students. A complete amateur radio station has been built at Wasilla High School.
WHEREAS, the Anchorage Amateur Radio Club is sponsoring the American Radio Relay League Alaska Convention in August 2008.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sarah Palin, Governor of the state of Alaska, hereby proclaim the week of July 28 through August 3, 2008 as:
Amateur Radio Week
in Alaska and encourage all Alaskans to recognize, appreciate, and support their fellow citizens who are radio operators for their contributions to public emergency services.
Dated July 23, 2008
Whats the other reasons???
I have never been to Alaska, but given the size of the state, ham radio would probably be the only means of communication in a majority of the state.
But I am sure that the left will find a way to hammer her over this too.
Ham radio operators are the bush pilots of communication.
Good for Sarah; this is one art/craft that should not die out.
I wouldn’t want Art Bell to get lonely, or is it George Noory? I Forget.
My fear is that Obama and his punks will simply outlaw ham radio as a “terrorist communication network” /sarcasm off.
Don’t you love the irony...
Wow!
Quite a hissy fit going on over there!
On the thread, technomage posted that it was "immature" for people to reject Romney just because of this issue. Editor-Surveyor hit the nail on the head with his answer. ES's answer clarifies what's wrong with Romney and, even though ES wrote it long before the primaries were even over, it also emphasizes what's RIGHT about Sarah Palin:
"Whether you like ham radio or not, not voting for someone based solely on that is rather immature."
Add yourself to the ever growing list of those that "just don't get it!"
It's all about who is in control, the people, or their 'masters.' - Romney has just decisively tipped his hand, and the cards he's shown are truly ugly.
Palin has tipped HER hand, as well -- a hand, a governing record, a lifestyle, a whole life history, that says she believes "the people" should be their own masters and the government a minor player. God bless her.
