I was struck that Sarah Palin did so poorly in the straw poll of conservatives (13%, tied with Ron Paul) at the big conservative confab this weekend. It may be that participants were just annoyed that she didn't show up but I also wonder whether we have another Dan Quayle scenario. Conservatives rallied around Quayle because he was mocked by liberal elites. But when he actually went out on his own and presented himself as a leader of the Republican Party in 2000, he fizzled (came in 8th in the Ames Iowa straw poll).
It turns out that conservatives loved him because liberals loathed him. It also turns out that, while useful, that's not quite enough.

Need a word to describe the Anti-Palin crowd.
I thought there were rules.
My guess is that CPAC is pretty heavily populated by party hacks and the upper-crust of the GOP — people that don’t usually take to small-town or rural conservatives as much.
Palin’s appeal is to middle American conservatives, where Romney’s appeal tends to be to wealthier conservatives and party hacks.

And it works. unfortunately. I am a nonconformist by nature and I do stand up for Palin; it isn't enough.
We need constant good press. It is four years until the next Presidential election if we still have them by then.
Palin runs for reelection in 2 years. They are out to unseat her then, too.
Why rely on something you know you can't have?
Reliance on good press just makes for an automatice excuse for losing, doesn't it?
I think Zig Ziglar called this a "Loser's Limp".
Eagle, I agree. In the end, if the Gov comes out with a message that 1)both parties are statist/socialist big government parties; 2)that Washingtonians have created a centralized government that's inimical to the nation, [witness the spending bill yesterday with 60%Dem-40%Pub pork (graft)] then, this message will resonate will majority Americans. They can't succesfully smear a popular message.
And Doctor, I say this with all respect to you, and I'm just asking-- If Palin is to be our Joan of Arc/Thatcher, do photos portraying her as "sexy" help her cause to be seen as a leader based on competence. The answer might well be "yes"-- I'm just respectfully asking.
Vin
I like where the Governor is sitting right now. You don’t want to be Rudy Giuliani or Howard Dean. Her time will come. in 12 or 16.
Elizabeth Dole was the early front runner in 2000. Everyone thought Edmund Muskie had the Democrat nomination locked up in 1972.
Wasn’t Richard Nixon politically dead in the water for years after the 1960 election ? he made a comeback.
That won't be on display until she actually gets into a room, a hall, the campaign. But, she has to have the message. -:)
I think it’s wishful thinking on the part of the hack who wrote this. He probably wishes Gov. Palin would go away. From what I understand CPAC draws most of its participants from the East Coast, and surprisingly a large proportion of them are college students. Romney must have quite an operation there since this is the 3rd year in a row he’s won the straw poll.
I totally agree. And support for Sarah is growing as evidenced by the ever-growing membership on TeamSarah.org
The media is intentionally smearing Palin for fear she WILL run and she WILL WIN. Obama’s paid bloggers are out in full force, and since Acorn is getting bailout money, they’ll either have more funds to pay people to fraudulently register voters, and/or will have more money for their legal defense fund. Also, the media and liberals are trying to split our party - divide and conquer.
belief.net is a liberal website and definitely NOT Christian. They’ve had columns written by susan sarandon and other pro-abortion supporters.

I’m not sure why that question would be addressed to me particularly ... but I don’t see why it would hurt that she is attractive.

Curth, All sites put Palin in their headlines in order to get “hits”. We can distinguish between material smears, and gratutious, meaningless smears intended to get attentiion. I think this “hit” is the latter.
I agree and though I took the bait, I think we all need to know of each smear attempt no matter what is behind it.
Sex appeal is always a marketing plus; it’s a question of packaging.
When Obama lets the press ooh and ah over his pectorals, that goes too far, but the sexy-librarian thing Palin has down is not a handicap, especially since the group most likely to be threatened by it—married women suspicious of women they perceive as more attractive than themselves—is largely reassured by her maternal commitments that she’s really on their side.
Where Palin will struggle will be with unmarried women who, on some level, consider her competition or an image of attractiveness to men whose content (marriage, family, etc.) to which they object. This group, though, is one of the hardest for the GoP to reach in any event, since they view most of political questions through the lens of their sexual insecurity, seeking surrogate paternal support from generous social programmes and easy access to abortion.

The question was directed to you because I'm a 'screw-up"- it was intended to be directed to a different poster on the thread.
But, I nonetheless appreciate your reply. Sorry. -:)

Okay?
No problem. Seemed a bit of a nonsequitur — but I’m always up for answering questions about attractive women.

Exactly
The people at CPAC were “punishing” her by not voting for her, because she didn’t attend!
I thought Conservatives were supposed to be the grown-ups, guess I was wrong.
It can come from conversations at the office coffee room, as we go about daily life; and the remarks we make to people might cause them to think ... consider from another slant. Wisely chosen words. We might be surprised by the effect, it could have on society now.
It is fallen on each of us to do our part.
