Policy Failure Wanted

You’ll never guess who wants Obama’s tax policy to fail. via Yahoo:

“I would never want to adversely affect anything that is charitable or good,” Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, said of Obama’s call to limit high-income taxpayers’ itemized deductions for charitable donations and mortgage interest.

Wow. That’s breaking pretty hard left. I thought policy failure wantage in the form of opposition to higher taxes was a Capitol offense.

Republicans said the president’s plan to charge fees to industries that spew greenhouse gases amounts to a stealthy tax increase for all Americans that will far exceed the new $400 annual tax cut for workers that he wants to extend beyond 2010.

“The president’s budget increases taxes on every American, and does so during a recession,” said Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, the top Republican on the Ways and Means Committee.

Hang on a minute now. I thought taxes on greenhouse gas producers were only supposed to target evil forces of warmification! Lumpenrustbeltproles paying for their sins is one thing. But there’s gotta be some way to work in a special exemption for Volvo drivers with “LOVE YOUR MOTHER” “THINK LOCALLY ACT GLOBALLY” and “OBAMA ‘08″ bumperstickers!

Ha ha, good fun. But wait, there’s more.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner argued that the Obama proposal would reduce taxes for most Americans. Any increases, he said, wouldn’t occur until 2011, when the economy is “safely into recovery.”

Sure. 2011, when the mission is accomplished. You know, if it wasn’t for the economic scorched-earth policies, I’m beginning to think I’d be enjoying this admin. OK, that and the Kumabayahist surrenderism. AP, though it has strived mightily to come about on an adversarial tack in these opening weeks of the Obama admin, manages to report all of this with no hint of snark.
