Its one thing when jaundiced observers such as your servant dissect higher education. Its quite another when the dissection is done by insiders, particularly when they havent left their day jobs yet.
Here is the question: Are we really free today, or are we now becoming more and more enslaved by the constructs of the Übermensch-the superman-the power brokers, the elites, the fittest who have survived in the political arenas of campaigns or campuses? Oklahoma Wesleyan University president Everett Piper asks in the January 2009 issue of Perspective magazine. Are we free to live within the boundaries of justice that come from the classical liberal education of the university-uni-verities, uni-veritas?
Or are we becoming more and more bound by groupthink, political correctness, and populous powerwhat M. Scott Peck calls the diabolical human mind? Perspective is published by the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs, where Piper is an adjunct fellow.
The funny thing is, there is no record of Piper meeting Barbara Olshansky, although she looks like a poster child for his thesis. While we know that the world views Guantanamolike Abu Ghraibas a symbol of the excesses committed during the executives prosecution of the war on terror, we know also that it is only one of many detention facilities selected to hide the executives unlawful and horrific treatment of people from the rest of the world and from us, the People [italics Olshanskys], she writes in the November/December issue of the American Bar Associations National Security Law Report....
