We have also seen the publication of a couple of unusual videos featuring Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, one with him delivering a funeral sermon in front of a crowd of several hundred people, and another showing him at a large wedding alongside half the jihadi community in Zarqa. I suspect these videos are part of an attempt to bolster al-Maqdisi’s legitimacy by showing that he is enjoying freedom of movement and expression. By the way I highly recommend the 2-hour wedding video. It offers a fascinating inside look into the sociology of Islamism. It serves as a great illustration of a point I made in a recent article about Zarqa, namely that you cannot deradicalise entire communities.

“A Bit More on al-Maqdisi’s Quotes…”

SNIPPET: “Shaykh Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, jihadi among jihadists, this week quoted two products with which I am intimately familar, CTC’s Militant Ideology Atlas and CTC’s Sentinel. It’s a hoot to say the least. Thomas Hegghammer over at Jihadica has the best overview out there, not just of this, but of al-Maqdisi’s curious behavior since being released by the Jordanians. I just want to add a couple background thoughts to Jihadica’s always-incisive analysis.”

SNIPPET: “So, in short, al-Maqdisi is on the ropes. He’s being shouted at from within the movement but can only look outside of the movement (to his worst enemies, actually) for affirmation that he’s still the real deal.”

“Maqdisi invokes McCants”

SNIPPET: “The al-Maqdisi controversy has taken a very interesting new turn. In a statement posted his website earlier this week, Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi cited several Western scholars, including Dutch al-Maqdisi specialist Joas Wagemakers and Jihadica founder Will McCants, to make the point that his enemies understand him better than his detractors in the jihadi community do.

The statement, entitled “Among the Methods Used by the Infidels to Plot Against the Call and the Preachers, and shared by many Ignorants and Fools,” represents another attempt by al-Maqdisi to rid himself of accusations that he has moderated his position on jihad. For previous attempts see here and here.

What’s distinctive about this statement is its frequent references to Western academics and liberal Arab commentators, which al-Maqdisi uses variously to discredit his critics and to boost his own credentials.”
