It is up in the air as to whether they are even ‘mistakes’. ICE started an investigation on Hawaii for illegal aliens last summer.
I knew that, maybe they were embarassed by an incident in which a man assumed a dead man’s identity and managed to avoid capture for 8 years while living in HI! I ran across the story posted at “The Star-Bulletin” website during one of my searches and read it. The story detailed how a man on disability died in CA and another man assumed his identity even convincing the SS offices that claims of his death were greatly exaggerated! He moved to HI and avoided detection for 8 years before he was caught, charged and sentenced. His undoing came from his “hobby” or part time job as a gemologist, which led to the discovery of his past.
When I read the comments at “The Star Bulletin” and how some of the “mistakes” dealt with race I wondered whether he was adopted or the paperwork was changed when his father visited in 1971. Unfortunately the term African American didn’t become commonly used until the 1980’s, in the 1970’s the term used was black. One more theory bites the dust as far as “African” listed as race on the C.O.L.B.
