I always thought coaches got fired for losing. On the same day he sent an email refusing to apologize for his team's success, a Texas high school girls' basketball coach was terminated. The coach, Micah Grimes, of Dallas' Covenant School, had come under fire for winning a game 100-0, making national news.

"We just said, 'The hell with it,' " said Jim Richardson, Dallas Academy's headmaster. . . Dallas Academy is busy piecing together a new schedule of non-league games.

The school/team initially said that it was not embarrassed by the 100-0 loss. So one has to ask, have they been so humiliated by the national pity party thrown in their honor that they are withdrawn from league competition entirely?
If yes, then is it more humiliating to loose by a great margin or to be pitied for loosing? Does our pity do more harm than good?
They are doing the rational thing and stopping play in a league that is literally “out of their league.” It has nothing to do with pity or losing by 100.
Had they lost by 50 it would be just as bad.
Thank God this coach was fired.
100-0, that is pathetic. A good coach would have found creative ways to have his team work on their skills instead of jumping up and down as they reached 100.
Good fire by the Christian school.
You gotta love the free marketplace of ideas in America.
From what I understand both schools are 2A. They were outperformed not out of league. The boys team beat Covenant 50-38, immediately after the 100-0 girls game.
It has nothing to do with pity or losing by 100. Had they lost by 50 it would be just as bad.
The loosing team has been loosing for four years now and has lost by margins as large as 48 points. What is the difference in between now and then? Why withdraw now? What has changed?
I agree that the coach should not have run up the score, but I am curious to know if our well meaning pity has had an undesirable consequence.
The boys’ team is irrelevant. If the girls have been losing for 4 years and by as much as 48 points, they are playing out of their league.
I mean that in the colloquial way, not in the “this is how the state assigns schools to sports leagues according to enrollment” way.
“To those who need it we should show it.”
Maybe its a translation thing but I can’t find that in my Bible...
“I repeat the example from my previous post: Is it mercy when a college professor gives a failing student a b? In both cases, those who fail can learn from their failure.”
nice non sequitur...
“Ecclesiastes”
Nowhere in there does it say a time to humiliate. This Christian School bore a terrible witness for God in this game. And in *everything* we do we should aim to glorify God..
You said — “In this mismatch the fired coach continued a full court press and fast break offense, grossly exacerbating the difference.”
As I remember it from my younger days, the coach would send in the second string, when the lead was far enough ahead. That would give experience to those others....
You said — “I strongly believe that you do NOT do people favors by letting them win. Not even special-ed students.”
No, you don’t do that. What you do is send in your worst players so they can have some fun and get some experience..., probably one of the few times they’ll ever get game experience...
That should slow things down enough... LOL..
You said — “So when the coach of my sons high school team (my son doesnt play) sent in all subs when they were ahead by 30 with three minutes left the other night, he was violating this no-mercy rule?”
That’s exactly what I remember they did on my high school team... :-)
You said — “Almost 50 years later I have not understood the concept of “throwing” a game.”
It makes sense for family peace with a wife... LOL...
You said — “He did use the whole bench.”
About that time, if I were the coach, I would begin using the time to train (in real-time) some more difficult plays and practice on those with a “real opponent”... That would have been interesting.
You know..., like, “we’ve been trying out this new play, so why don’t we give it a try here...” and so on..., with a number of lesser used plays...
Well then..., I would say it’s about time to make up new plays and practice them in the actual game... LOL...
Well, the coach could have practice some plays they weren’t very familiar with yet, and move some positions around and done some new and innovative plays that were never practiced... :-)
That would have been interesting...
You said — “He wasn’t fired for running up the score, he was fired for publicly going against the school administration’s apology. Publicly denouncing the school administration will get a faculty member fired every time.”
I haven’t seen the reason he was fired, but if that’s the case, then I can see why he was fired...
You quoted — “Dallas Academy is busy piecing together a new schedule of non-league games.”
Ummmm..., like against midgets who have never played a basketball game before... LOL...
They tried to schedule a game with the Dallas School for the Blind, but the DSFB couldn’t see playing them.
LOL... pretty good...
My Algebra-Trig teacher told me that in 11th grade.
Can’t believe I had a chance to use it after all these years. :-)
