A Poet for the Know-It-All: Alexander's On-The-Rag Time

Elizabeth Alexander

While it's fair to say I'm not the most qualified to judge President-elect Obama's choices for the Interior (I was never much for decorating) or the Treasury (as every other Thursday I'm lucky if I have enough money for lunch), but Christianity and poetry are two of the few things I'm qualified to critique. And, although I may have some bones to pick with Rick Warren about how he sometimes trades Truth for tolerance, at least he's promoting a theology that for the most part is based on the Trinity. On the other hand, Elizabeth Alexander, Obama's choice to compose and recite the Inauguration poem, is probably far more revealing, for her verses elude to an intellectual elitism and black-feminist agenda that excludes Our Lord and Savior.

I followed your link and there are no surprises there. I've become pretty proficient at reading "countenances" over the years and I read this one correctly.

I await future "Obamarevelations" in the not too distant future.

Not surprising. I hate these lousy “black feminist poets” that seem to have invaded the entire universe and turn up everywhere that there are leftists.

I was at a great poetry recital years ago at the Piskey (raving loony liberal) Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC. Poets such as Czeslaw Milosz, Derek Walcott and Seamus Heany read ... and then came the US “poet laureate” of the day (during the Clinton years), a black feminist dim bulb named Rita Dove, employed somewhere in the academy, who read a poem about her vagina. I think everybody was so stunned at the contrasts between real poets and this idiot that even the many liberals were a little embarrassed.
