I often brag to folks about living in Kennesaw, Georgia. “We have a big sign out here when you enter the city limits.” I tell them, “It says ‘Welcome to Kennesaw, We’re Packin’. Packin’ heat that is.” Buy an ad on DigitalJournal.com In 1981, Morton Grove, IL passed a law prohibiting citizens within the city limits to own firearms. In response, the city council of Kennesaw, GA unanimously passed a city ordinance in 1982 requiring heads of households to own at least one firearm with ammunition. The crime rate in Kennesaw at the time was already quite low, with only 11 burglaries per 1,000 residents in 1981; but nonetheless, the crime rate dropped even lower (by 89%) after the ordinance was passed.
In 1998, Decatur, GA, (another Atlanta suburb with a population of comparable size to that of Kennesaw) reported 4,049 property crimes per 100,000 residents, while Kennesaw had merely 243 property crimes per 100,000 (that is .243 per 1,000). In contrast, Morton Grove has a crime rate of about 10 times that of Kennesaw.
For the liberals with the American Civil Liberties Union on speed dial, slow down and don’t get your panties in a bunch. The ACLU has already taken the city of Kennesaw to federal court over the city ordinance, but Kennesaw won.
I can’t stand violence. You couldn’t drag me to a theater showing of “Friday the Thirteenth,” or “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” No thank you! Personal gun ownership isn’t about participating in violence, it is about stopping violence. It is about protecting yourself from those who are violent.
The Second Amendment in our Bill of Rights is actually all about the citizens protecting themselves against government. If you take away the ability of a citizenry to protect themselves from government, those citizens have no way to practice their ability to control their government. In other words, we have no way of protecting our Constitutional rights. In fact, it is also American citizens owning guns, that acts as a big deterrent to our enemies who would ponder the idea of invading our country.
I know this sweet, young college girl with great wisdom and a heart of gold, who was mortified when I told her about the ordinance. She also lives in Kennesaw. After patiently listening to all the “compassion” and logic she could muster about how wrong this was, and all the violence caused by guns, I just asked her a few questions.
“How about you put a sign in your front yard that reads, ‘This house has no alarm system, no guns, and no dogs’” I asked. She didn’t like that idea. “When was the last time you heard of a shooting range being robbed?” I asked. She hadn’t heard of such a thing.
I went on to explain to her that criminals do not think like she does. If a law stated that she could not have a gun, then she would follow the law, and not have a gun. This is not how criminals think. Those who would use a gun to harm others in an unlawful way are already committed to not following the law. I just love watching the light bulb go off in someone’s head.
So you liberal, metro-sexual guys with all that compassion and understanding can leave the safety of your families up to chance. Give me a pistol-packin' man like former Mayor Leonard Church of Kennesaw any day!

Read the law itself in post nbr 35: If you have a religious or conscious reason NOT to have a weapon, you have that right NOT to have a weapon in your house. Then again, you don't have to tell the crooks whether or not you've chosen to exercise that right NOT to carry.

It gets up above 90 degrees a couple of times every year. At almost 1100 feet altitude, the temperature and humidity is much less than you'd expect.

Not at all, never really was, however, with the rapid spread of the city of Atlanta into the suburbs, including the illegal aliens which ICE still needs to apprehend, it is a great law. I live in Kennesaw, too, and you betcha we are packin’ in our household!
Before I moved down here, my brother had already been living in the ATL area. He said watching the evening news was like watching the daily death toll. He was right. Except in Kennesaw, we rarely ever have any violent crimes and my household is known for packin’ heat and we’ve never had any problems. And we are not too far from Kennesaw St. University, which is growing. I am also glad we re-elected Saxby Chambliss to the Senate, he supports our 2nd Amendment Rights.
Really.. it’s no hick town by far. We also have a nice mall nearby and lots of good places to eat and shop. Kennesaw St. U. is getting its own football team within the next several years. The student apartments are very nice and fairly new. Kennesaw Mountain is nearby which is where battles were fought during the Civil War. There are some gorgeous million dollar homes near the mountain as well.
The commute into Atlanta sucks if you work normal 9-5p hours, especially into midtown or downtown, as they are reconstructing the 14th St. bridge and the street itself. I used to work on 14th St. In addition to the city of Atlanta, you can commute to Cartersville and to Canton within a 25 minute drive (or less), which would be going against traffic during rush hour. There is always construction and new neighborhoods growing. There should be a good amount of jobs, and even tons of restaurants in the area - Marietta, Smyrna, and thereabout. The Galleria area at I-75 and I-285 on the north of ATL is growing with many businesses moving out of the perimeter (downtown & midtown areas). There is a major Air Reserve Base in the area as well. I love living in Kennesaw as it’s a nice and pretty area, and safe!

I do the Smyrna into downtown commute every day.
It’s not too bad most days - around 20-30 min. The bridge closing and connector expansion haven’t been too bad. What screws things up is when there’s something big going on at the GWCC. It usually floods off that Dome/GWCC exit and backs traffic up all the way to Moore’s Mill.
I know it’s a different story from Kennesaw. I get on right at I-285 so I miss all that craziness through Marietta.

That's my daily commute, and maybe once a month or so there's a backup due to a wreck on 20 or maybe on 285 southbound near 20. But it's 20 minutes portal to portal for me (I live in the grey area between Smyrna and Vinings).

Truth In Politics: Gun Sales Boom After Election Reporting Mike Flannery
CHICAGO (CBS) ― Gun sellers say the election of Barack Obama is helping them avoid the recession. Sales of new guns are booming - up an estimated 50 percent in the suburbs.
In Wednesday's Truth in Politics, CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports the gun lobby spent big trying to defeat Obama this year, outraged by his promise to reinstate a ban on military-style assault weapons. On talk radio, he was denounced as a "gun grabber." Now, as Obama heads to the White House, millions are rushing to reload.
Business has rarely been better for certified arms instructor Jan Gofron.
He's teaching a flood of new students about semi-automatic handguns as well as tactical shot guns some call "street sweepers."
The most powerful weapons are disappearing fastest from local gun shops. At Elmwood Park's Illinois Gun Works, sales started soaring as it became apparent Barack Obama would win the White House.
"Once people started to realize that the Democrats had a better chance, or seemed to have a better chance, they started getting nervous about certain gun regulations," said Illinois Gun Works' Owner Dan Mastrianni.
Recent gun sales are up nationally 42 percent. In Illinois, they are up 38 percent; and in Chicago's suburbs 50 percent.
"It's simply paranoia," said Thomas Mannard of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence. "And it's irresponsible, from my point of view, to be touting how wonderful this is. More guns definitely equal more death."
Mannard worked with then-state Sen. Barack Obama to pass Illinois' ban on assault weapons. Obama also helped close a loophole that allowed gun shows to sell weapons without doing background checks on buyers. Mannard now hopes for a national law.
Gun dealers say the threat of new rules will keep their sales booming.
"I don't expect this to slow down anytime soon," Mastrianni said. "What happened during Prohibition? Whatever people can't have, that's what they want. They can't get enough of it."
Like many, Mastrianni does not believe gun issues are anywhere near top of the president-elect's political agenda. Senior Advisor David Axelrod declined to discuss what, if any, gun-related legislation the administration might propose, nor when. He noted they are busy picking people for top jobs.
I would lateral over to Atlanta Rd and go in that way.
