America Unbalanced: Has our Yin Outstripped Our Yang?
Nietzche is Dead ^ | 26 Nov 08 | foutsc

Is America out of balance? Feminine Yin and masculine Yang must be in balance to achieve harmony, according to the Chinese ancients. Has our nurturing Yin outstripped our self-reliant Yang?

Ed Kaitz has written a provocative piece in the American Thinker entitled, The Testosterone Crisis. He makes a convincing case that testosterone rich Yang is in short supply here in America. My personal observation is that it is publicly nonexistent in Europe outside of soccer hooligans and the dwindling klatch of professional soldiers.

The author arrived at this conclusion while in the park observing that dads simply shouted encouragement to their kids when they fell down, while mothers tended to take more nurturing actions.

In his book The Suicide of Reason Lee Harris argues that our present state of liberal democracy has led to "eliminating the alpha males from our midst, and at a dizzyingly accelerating rate." Instead of supporting and valuing testosterone's virtues we're "drugging our alpha boys with Ritalin." In addition, one could view Barack Obama's election as the triumph of yin over yang. Obama's policies promise to cast the father out of America's parks and replace him with the more "caring" and yin oriented federal government.

Both political parties now believe that they can garner votes by playing the yin, or compassion card. We've seen this with the Bush Administration and its heavily statist "compassionate conservatism." On the other hand, Democrats in congress thought that extending loans to unqualified borrowers was an act of compassion. An excess of yin is now causing many of our states, like California, to go broke. Despite these examples an "uncaring" America was the chief rallying cry of Barack and Michelle Obama during the recent election.

It’s ironic that the true ‘alpha-male’ candidate in this election was Sarah Palin.

Real men still exist in WV. They are dwindling elsewhere and in many cases being legislated and regulated out of existence.

It’s obvious that we, as a nation are ready for a black (and possibly an America hating Muslim) man as President - but not yet ready for a woman President.

For Lee Harris however the feminization of American men comes at an extremely high price:

“The end of testosterone in the West alone will not culminate in the end of history, but it may well culminate in the end of the West.””

Testosterone Tumbling in American Males

Related Health News

FRIDAY, Oct. 27 (HealthDay News) — The testosterone-fueled American male may be losing his punch.

Over the past two decades, levels of the sex hormone in U.S. men have been falling steadily, a new study finds.

For example, average total testosterone levels in men aged 65 to 69 fell from 503 nanograms/decileter (ng/dL) in 1988 to 423 ng/dL in 2003.

The reasons for this trend are unclear, said researchers at the New England Research Institutes in Waterdown, Mass. They noted that neither aging nor certain other health factors, such as smoking or obesity, can fully explain the decline.

“Male serum testosterone levels appear to vary by generation, even after age is taken into account,” study lead author Thomas G. Travison said in a prepared statement.

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone and plays an important role in maintaining bone and muscle mass. Low testosterone levels have been linked to health problems, including lowered libido and diabetes.

It’s normal for men’s testosterone levels to peak in their late 20s and then start to gradually decline, experts say. But this study found that overall testosterone levels are lower than they were 20 years ago.

“In 1988, men who were 50 years and older had higher serum testosterone concentrations than did comparable 50-year-old men in 1996. This suggests that some factor other than age may be contributing to the observed declines in testosterone over time,” Travison said.

He and his colleagues analyzed blood samples — along with health and other information — from about 1,500 men in the greater Boston area who took part in the Massachusetts Male Aging Study. That study collected data in 1987-89, 1995-97, and 2002-04.

“This analysis deals with men who were born between 1915 and 1945, but our baseline data were not obtained until the late 1980s, when the elder subjects were about 70 years old, and the youngest about 45,” Travison said.

“Events occurring in earlier decades could certainly help explain our results, if their effects persisted into recent years,” he noted.

The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
