Kinsley: Let Obama Smoke
The Patriot Room ^ | November 20, 2008 | Bill Dupray

Posted on 11/20/2008 6:29:20 AM PST by Bill Dupray

There is nothing more reviled by the freedom-killing, do-gooder, health police than smokers. They are the modern-day equivalent of lepers: unfit to be around "normal" people and banished to inhospitable locations. The nanny-staters even force business owners to ban smoking, a direct infringement on free markets and freedom, under the guise of protecting employees who have to work there and could not possibly find another job if they don't like the smoke.

The point is that lefties are violently intolerant of smokers.

But, as with all liberalism, the elites can do what they please, because they are more important and better than the little people. In this vein, Michael Kinsley says we should cut Obama a break and let him smoke.

More . . .

There is nothing more steely than the calm of GWB. In fact, sometimes he seems too calm. But over the years our enemies have come to respect that he speaks softly, but....

I haven’t liked how he has handled the country’s financial issues, though, where he has been unduly reactive to political expediency. Perhaps he thought he had to do something to make it seem the Republicans cared.

Anyway, overall, with Roberts and Alito, and with Iraq now a settled matter, with OBL pretty much powerless under Bush’s leadership, I think Bush has left a good legacy and did his duty as President.

As for the financial mess, it really is part of the Clinton legacy, but it’ll take years of honest writing in economic journals before that fact becomes apparent to the masses.

All in all, I end up liking Bush and feeling vindicated in voting for him.

Still say ‘Bush for Pres of the New Republic of Texas’. I’m sure most other Texans still love their ‘favorite son’. Don’t know if most Texans would prefer to go the independence route though as I do.

Time for a game of “What if?”—the following is not a real article, but hey, “what if?”

From the New York Times
October 15th, 2008

Jill Breland lies in her hospital bed and painfully reaches for the help button. She is down to 86 pounds and can no longer get out of bed on her own power. The tumor has spread beyond her lungs and is invading healthy tissue throughout her body. The doctors give her three months to live, but that might be generous.

Her eight-year old daughter Morgan sits in the hospital room with a coloring book. “Mommy, when you feel better, can we go to the zoo again?” Jill fights back tears and smiles and says she will try to get better.

Like many victims of lung cancer, Jill was a smoker. “I was thinking of quitting back in 2001.” she said. “But I said to myself ‘if president Bush smokes, why can’t I?’

Jill voted for Bush back in 2001, but deeply regrets the vote now. “As president, he should set a good example.” she says. “I think of all the children who look up to the president. Thousands will die because he inspired them to take up smoking.”

Little Morgan is more blunt. “The President is bad because he smokes. My mommy smoked and it made her really sick...”

etc., etc.

NO SMOKING INSIDE THE WHITE HOUSE INCLUDING THE PRESIDENTIAL QUARTERS. And no bringing Smoke Filled Clothing Inside the White House, either!

Let him smoke crack. He would probably make better decisions.

Young kids really can see through BS better than people raised in an American Idol culture, can't they?

What actually made me fall in love with my wife is seeing how her four year old neice just adored her. The kid was so cute, I knew she was the real deal. I know it sounds weird, but that's really what led me to her.

In a democracy, that is a good thing for ruler and ruled to know they have in common.

As keenly pointed out on another thread, subjects are ruled.

Nanny State PING

The point is that lefties are violently intolerant of smokers.

No more so than the intolerant righties, as proven on many threads here on FR --- including this one.

Well said and accurate too!

There is nothing conservative about the freedom hating jerks on these threads.

They're so tiresome, aren't they?

What whiners some Americans have become. There's a certain mob mentality there, too.

I have no problem with Obamessiah smoking if he wants to. It’s probably the only thing I could like about him.

However, the One missed a golden opportunity to stand for an American minority by not lighting up on the stage and reminding people tobacco is legal and smokers pay large amounts of tax to the treasuries.

In fact, given the liberals love of tax dollars from other people, shouldn’t smokers and drinkers be revered by them?

I guess it is only our money they worship.

>>It’s probably the only thing I could like about him.

Ditto. And your suggestion, too, however, if he’d lit a fag on stage, Dems woulda been scandalized.

If Obama has any balls, he’ll overturn Hillary’s ban on smoking in the WH.

But, I doubt it, Clinton didn’t oppose his wife.

Amen, Gabz.

Obama will have to cave to pressure and outlaw smoking in all PUBLIC areas.

Sweet, first they get chased outside, and then, POW! Public ban, and this will include your car, after all, it’s on a public road.

Smokers, the Modern Jews.

Wow, the comments on this thread are quite hateful. You’d think that no one has ever smoked in the whitehouse, ever in the history of the united states.

In Modern America, a smoker is socially not only lower than a used car salesman, but located in the hierarchy as a peer of a pederast on meth.

But, the goobers do like them, since they keep raising taxes on a habit you cannot indulge in anywhere, except a few states in the South.

And then you get Nannyists masquerading as Republicans.....

Marry a Fag, Don’t Smoke One (at least not in public....

Let's see now...

Bush was accused of being a "dry drunk." Is Kinsley suggesting that Obama might make rash presidential decisions if he is suddenly overcome with nicotine withdrawal symptoms that might make him jumpy and irritable?

I thought Barry told his wife that he would quit smoking if she agreed to his campaign for president. What happened to that agreement?

The rumor is that Laura Bush still smokes and has done all during her years as First Lady. We just never saw her doing it. It is unhealthy, but adults must make their own decisions.
